  • Back in the winner's circle

    Erik Gjovik|Oct 7, 2024

Two devastating Class A – Region 2 losses by three total points didn't afford the Carrington Cardinal football team a wealth of time to feel sorry for their predicament. The bus ride up Highway 281 stopped in Belcourt for a matchup with former Class AA league opponent Turtle Mountain, and the Cards hoped the newly-installed turf would allow their team speed to take over. CHS got back into the playoff conversation with a 42-16 win over the Braves, on another big offensive performance netting j...

  • On to the playoffs!

    Erik Gjovik|Oct 7, 2024

It was a party 18 years in the making. The Griggs/Midkota Titans broke a long playoff drought dating back all the way to 2006 with a 48-20 victory over the Enderlin Eagles at Hendrickson Field in Enderlin to earn the 9-Man – Region 2 crown. The Titans (4-2, 3-0 Region 2) have just one game left on their conference obligations, as they played Richland on the road this past Friday. G/M will finish the regular season in Cooperstown October 11 against Tri-State (Fairmount/Campbell-Tintah, M...

  • Fight in the nest

    Erik Gjovik|Oct 7, 2024

While Ellendale's height and back row play caused problems at times for the Carrington Cardinals, in the end, CHS came away with a four-set win Tuesday, October 1, in the East Gym. In the 25-18, 23-25, 25-18 and 25-18 triumph, the local Cards had three players in double figures offensively. Sophomore Harper Kollman led the way with 12 kills, followed by Isabel Wendel's 11 and 10 more by Calleigh Hewitt. Ellendale was aggressive against the Carrington block, and though they found the floor on...

  • Busy week for Griggs/Midkota

    Erik Gjovik|Oct 7, 2024

The Griggs/Midkota volleyball team had almost every scenario a squad could possibly face over a week's worth of action. A humbling defeat (a 3-0 loss to a strong May-Port-CG team in Finley on September 26) was followed by a convincing four-set win over Nelson County in McVille September 30 and a stirring five-set triumph against South Border at GCCHS the next night improved the Titans' record to 9-11 this season. Against the Patriots, G/M Coach Presley Paintner said her team gave away too many f...

  • Thunder blank W-W Miners, 3-0

    Erik Gjovik|Oct 7, 2024

Medina/Pingree-Buchanan got their 15th victory of the volleyball campaign with a 25-13, 25-12 and 25-14 result over the Wilton-Wing Miners on September 26 at Wilton. Senior middle hitter Maddie Gefroh dominated the match with 20 kills and three blocks, and junior Brynn Sorenson was also active with seven kills and 23 digs in the back row for the Thunder. Other leaders for M/P-B included Violet Bohl's 34 assists, and Cierra Mack had a pair of aces. On the front line, Destiny Opp and Jorgen Tripp...

  • HWC blanks Washburn, falls to NR-S

    Lane Moellenkamp|Oct 7, 2024

Harvey-Wells County started the week picking up their third consecutive win, as they defeated Washburn and ended the week with a regional loss to New Rockford-Sheyenne. The Hornets' three-game win streak included two five set victories, but the two games this week were shorter as they defeated the Cardinals in three straight and fell to the Rockets in four games. HWC 3, Washburn 0 HWC picked up another big win, as they held off a couple of Washburn rallies to come away with a 25-17, 25-16,...

  • Runners at Border Battle, NR-S

    Erik Gjovik|Oct 7, 2024

One of the biggest meets in which they'll ever participate, in fact, one so big they have an on-site caterer, faced local runners at the Border Battle in Grand Forks Saturday, September 28. CHS and Griggs/Midkota were among 2,100 runners in the field at the meet, and one Cardinal and Titan finished in the top 25. Kenadie Pazdernik was eighth in the Class A girls' varsity division and Kadence Spickler took 22nd for G/M at the Border Battle. The Cards, as a team, were 12th in the girls' race and...

  • HWC football defeats Rugby, 39-22

    Lane Moellenkamp|Oct 7, 2024

The HWC defense once again flexed their muscles with four sacks and an interception, helping pick up a convincing 39-22 victory over Rugby in Class A – Region 2 football action in Rugby on Friday, September 27. The difference in the score may have only been 17 points, but the Hornets controlled this game from start to finish. Some untimely HWC turnovers helped the Panthers find the scoring column, but the defense stepped it up in the second half and the running game was outstanding as the H...

  • Aggies crash Cards' party

    Erik Gjovik|Sep 30, 2024

Circumstances can turn on a dime in the span of two weeks. Two weeks previously, the Carrington football team was riding high following a convincing win over Grafton to improve to 3-0. But an overtime defeat to the rival HWC Hornets by one point, 28-27, meant the Cardinals needed to regroup and quickly against another hungry Park River Area squad. On the strength of big games on the ground by Tucker Omdahl and Brennan Schramm, and timely passing by the Aggies' Jace Rosinski, Carrington's strong...

  • G/M routs Patriots, 30-6

    Erik Gjovik|Sep 30, 2024

You could say that the Griggs/Midkota Titans' 30-6 GCC Homecoming victory Friday, Sept. 20, over the May-Port-CG Patriots was a bit of karmic retribution for the last game the two teams played in 2022. In a 49-0 loss that year, the Titans were trailing MPCG by 37 with under a half minute remaining in the first half off a fumble deep in Patriot territory, when the opponents decided to resort to a hook-and-ladder play for a 76-yard touchdown for one last insult. G/M Coach (and Portland native)...

  • HWC keeps rolling with big win over Bottineau Braves

    Lane Moellenkamp|Sep 30, 2024

Harvey-Wells County put together two important things against Bottineau, and the result was a dominating win against a one- loss team as they routed the Braves, 35-14, on Friday, September 20 at L.C Loerch Field in Harvey. The two things that the Hornets excelled at were defensive pressure and the ground game. HWC, behind three sacks each from Tyler Swang and Christian Mertz, accumulated eight sacks overall, and had seven other plays that went down as tackles for loss, including three more from...

  • Cards take down Rockets; sweep Loboes

    Kyrie Dauenhauer and Erik Gjovik|Sep 30, 2024

Although the New Rockford-Sheyenne Rockets and the Carrington Cardinals are in different regions, the rivalry is still aflame. On Thursday, Sept. 19, the Rockets hosted the rivals to the south during the Cardinals' homecoming week, in hopes of being named the homecoming crushers once again. After three games, the Rockets were still working out their kinks and trying to get a good rotation locked in. With that, NR-S senior Tillie Swart made her varsity debut during the second and third sets...

  • HWC blanks 'Chucks, beat G/M in 5

    Lane Moellenkamp|Sep 30, 2024

Harvey-Wells County cruised in their Region 4 volleyball matchup in Harvey with St. John on Tuesday, September 17. The Hornets held the Woodchucks to 30 total points in three games en route to winning their fifth game of the year against just three losses. Braylee Keller started the night out on the right foot, as the sophomore had two kills to open game one. Kali Fike added an ace and a kill and HWC had a quick 6-1 lead. The lead grew to 11-1 on back-to-back kills from Rylee Jones. Three HWC...

  • In District 6 battle, Lions edge Thunder

    Erik Gjovik|Sep 30, 2024

The Medina/Pingree-Buchanan Thunder volleyball team showed their mettle as a Region 3 contender with solid showings in a two-match split September 19 and 21. In Pingree, M/P-B didn't let a first set loss to LaMoure/Litchville-Marion faze them, as they bounced back from that three-point defeat with 25-15, 25-14 and 25-21 wins over the Loboes. The District 6 match of the year followed two days later, with the number one and two teams in the league, Linton-HMB and M/P-B, battling it out for who...

  • A game of inches

    Erik Gjovik|Sep 23, 2024

After 48 minutes of football, it came down to two 10-yard drives, and one two-point play that would decide the victor and hard-luck loser. HWC already secured their end of the bargain with a three-yard touchdown from Kayl Sieg on the first possession of overtime, and Carter Laber's kick through the uprights meant Carrington had to score a touchdown in four plays and convert at least an extra point. Corbin Clifton secured a deflected pass from Josh Bickett from five yards out, and Coach Kyle...

  • Titans prevail in defensive battle

    Erik Gjovik|Sep 23, 2024

When he looked at the defense statistics following his team's 16-6 win over the Maple River Raiders on Friday, September 13, Griggs/Midkota Coach Ryan Dockter had nothing to criticize. Two sacks, two interceptions, four tackles for loss and a forced fumble, and the opposition's only touchdown coming on a recovered offensive fumble in their own end zone, meant that the Titans got their second win of the season and surpassed last year's victory total halfway through the fall slate. "Our defense...

  • Cards fall to E-K-M, Park River

    Erik Gjovik|Sep 23, 2024

Two consecutive regulation match losses have been a rare occurrence for the Carrington Cardinal volleyball program. The Cards came up short in their District 5 opener against the Edgeley-Kulm/Montpelier Rebels in Edgeley Thursday, September 12, taking the first set by a tally of 25-22 before falling in the next three, 22-25, 21-25 and 15-25. Isabel Wendel's 10 kills and two aces led the Cards in both statistics, and she also had 17 assists. Teammate Brynn Smith was the top passer for the match...

  • Hornets need five to beat KC

    Lane Moellenkamp|Sep 23, 2024

Harvey-Wells County came from two games down to win the final two sets and defeat Kidder County, 3-2, in non-region volleyball action on Tuesday, September 9, at Fessenden. The Hornets started their comeback in game one with an ace from Taylor Nelson and kills from Rachel Neumiller and Braylee Keller to cut the lead to 14-10. Another kill from...

  • Cards improve to 3-0

    Erik Gjovik|Sep 16, 2024

The Carrington Cardinals weren't going to let the slow start in a hostile environment hamper them two weeks in a row. And behind pinpoint passing from Josh Bickett and big plays from his backs and receivers, CHS is now 3-for-3 for the season with a 34-16 win in Grafton over the Spoilers to begin Class A - Region 2 play Friday night, September 6. It wasn't even that close in the final books, as the Cards held Grafton to 78 total yards of offense until the Spoilers got two late touchdowns on the...

  • Titans give stiff challenge to W/L

    Erik Gjovik|Sep 16, 2024

Griggs/Midkota knows now that they have the horses to improve on last year's one-win showing. Now it's all about learning how to finish. G-M earned some respect from longtime southeastern power Wyndmere/Lidgerwood in Wyndmere on Friday, September 6, taking a late 28-26 loss to the Warbirds. "We knew this game would be tough," G-M Head Coach Ryan Dockter said. "W/L is a well-coached team by [Scott] Strenge, and always puts a good team on the field." Dockter said he and his staff felt G-M matched...
