  • Shipman's gem stymies Loboes; CHS routs KC

    Erik Gjovik|May 15, 2023

In his junior season as the Carrington staff ace, Grady Shipman has seemed to have two types of pitching outings. Effective wildness, or dialed-in confidence. Shipman had the latter going on in LaMoure Monday afternoon, May 8, striking out 13 L-L-M Loboes hitters and needing just one run to register a 1-0 thriller against one of the region's traditionally-salty lineups. The only hit registered against the hard-throwing righty was in the third inning, when the Loboes' Tate Mart reached on a...

  • MPCG, down seven, stuns Cards

    Erik Gjovik|May 15, 2023

Nothing is a sure thing in high school baseball. The May-Port-CG Patriots, after overcoming separate five-run and seven-run deficits, proved that to be the case in a wild one at Mayville Friday afternoon, May 5. Staring at a 12-5 hole entering the bottom of the sixth inning, the Pats dug deep, scored the equalizer with a lucky-seven spot, and raced home for a walk-off win and Gatorade bath over Carrington, 13-12. Marshall Judisch's game-winning single brought home Lucas Fugleberg with the...

Qualifying distances came from the Titan throwing corps, courtesy of Asia Becherl (shot put, discus), and Kaylee Johnson (shot put) on the girls' side, while Levi Kautzman hit the state qualifying standard in the boys' shot put at the Kiwanis/Lions. A full list of performances from the two meets are as follows: MPCG Invitatio...

Their record sits at 3-5 overall and in Region 2. Today (May 15), CHS is slated to host HWC at 4:30....

  • Young Hornets do well at Nedrose meet

    Lane Moellenkamp|May 15, 2023

The Harvey-Wells County junior high tracksters competed at Nedrose on Tuesday, May 2, and came away with some nice results. In the girls division, the Hornets finished in fifth place. Addisyn Faul led the way with a first place effort in the 100-meter hurdles, and a second place finish in the 200 hurdles. Emersyn Wolfe finished second in the 400 dash, and the 4x200 relay team of Rebekah Schimke, Aubrie Schindler, Wolfe and Faul also placed second. For the boys, HWC finished in fourth place with...

  • Cards busy at home meet, two others

    Erik Gjovik|May 15, 2023

Carrington's track team had the proverbial "full dance card", as they fueled up the bus for two meets and hosted one more in action from this past week. On Friday, May 5, the team went under the lights for the Hunter Seifert/Twilight Meet at Shiloh Christian's Miller Field in Bismarck, welcomed teams to town for the Kiwanis/Lions meet on Saturday, and headed to Devils Lake for the Ray McDaniel Invitational last Monday. The Cardinal girls won both the Shiloh and Carrington meets, and finished sec...

  • HWC gains state slots at Hanneman, Shiloh Twilight meets

    Lane Moellenkamp|May 15, 2023

The Harvey-Wells County track and field teams ended last week with back-to-back meets, running at the Charlie Hanneman Memorial Meet in Rugby on Thursday, May 4 and at Bismarck Shiloh Christian Hunter Seifert/Twilight Meet on Friday, May 5. The weather has played a major role in where the team participated this year, and after this past weekend's rain in the area, will continue to change venues for at least the upcoming week. The highlights this week included a two-event qualification from...

  • Wrestling Club holds banquet at CrossRoads

    Erik Gjovik|May 15, 2023

The Carrington Wrestling Club honored and recognized the kids, parents, coaches, volunteers and others that make the organization successful at their first year-end banquet Saturday night, May 5, at CrossRoads Golf Club. Dennis Freeman of the Wrestling Club served as host and master of ceremonies of the banquet, which the club hopes will become a yearly tradition. A prime rib supper, along with macaroni and potato salad, and various dessert items, was served to banquet patrons. At the event,...

  • Leaving a lasting legacy

    Erik Gjovik|May 8, 2023

In 12 years as an English teacher and coach in the Carrington School District, Tim Ranum has seen a half-generation of kids come through his classroom, and has graced the sidelines and dugout with his infectious enthusiasm. At the end of this summer, when John Raymond O'Hara American Legion Post 25 hosts the 2023 Class 'B' Baseball Tournament July 26-30, it will mark the end of Ranum's involvement with local sports. The Burlington native is stepping down as CHS' head boys' basketball coach...

Carrington's track teams made their way into the fresh spring air for their first two outdoor meets of the season, the Mariya Tate Bernhardt Memorial Meet in Rugby Saturday, April 29, and the Nedrose Varsity Meet in eastern Minot the following Monday. Both Cardinal squads earned first place as a team at Nedrose, with the girls almost eclipsing the 200-point mark and the boys scoring 97. At the Mariya Tate, CHS won the girls' meet with 92.5 points over host Rugby, and the CHS men took second to t...

  • Double dip for HWC at Elite 90, Mariya Tate

    Lane Moellenkamp|May 8, 2023

The Harvey-Wells County boys and girls track and field team participated in two meets on the same day this past week, as Bismarck hosted the Elite 90 meet for those athletes which had surpassed a certain distance or time, and Rugby hosted the Mariya Tate Memorial, both on Saturday, April 29. The Bismarck meet was an excellent opportunity, for those that chose to participate, to get valuable track and field experience at the Bismarck Community Bowl, which will host the state event at the end of...

  • Cards split with L-L-M, South Border in low-scoring games

    Erik Gjovik|May 8, 2023

Thanks to a dominating mound stint by LaMoure/Litchville-Marion's Anthony Hanson, CHS' unblemished record on the diamond is no more. The Loboes' ace struck out 11 and allowed just two hits to the Cards, and L-L-M took just enough advantage of limited scoring chances to shut out the locals, 3-0, at Townsend Field in LaMoure Monday, May 1. Cardinal starter Josh Bickett pitched a good game in spite of six walks, and gave up only three hits himself. Unfortunately for Bickett, all three LaMoure runs...

  • CHS batsmen take brooms to KC, So. Border in Steele

    Erik Gjovik|May 8, 2023

Carrington came back to the pack slightly with the return to Region 3 play, but in the end, it meant retaining their unbeaten string to begin the season to that point. Grady Shipman matched Kidder County ace Blake Braun strikeout for strikeout (13 each), and a big second inning rally was enough to carry the Cards to a nailbiting 5-4 win over the Wolves Friday, April 28, in a matchup of league contenders. In the nightcap, it was the Cards' three runs in the sixth inning that broke a 4-4 deadlock...

  • Cards improve to 3-0; Shipman homers again in win over V-D-A

    Erik Gjovik|May 1, 2023

Instead of largely taking what they wanted in their first two blowout wins of the spring baseball campaign, the Carrington Cardinals were merely content to accept what the Velva/Drake-Anamoose Aggies offered them last Monday. The Cards finished with just four hits in a 10-3 nonregion victory in Velva, but benefited from 16 total free baserunners via nine walks and seven errors. In the win, junior shortstop Grady Shipman hit his second home run of the spring, a first inning solo shot, and scored...

The Cards beat the Polar Bears, 27-25, and earned their most lopsided win in program history, 31-1, the following day. Stats were not available at press time. (Courtesy photo)...

  • Sporting events lost or postponed to field status

    Erik Gjovik|May 1, 2023

Lingering snow and field wetness has once again done a number on spring athletic schedules. Softball Carrington’s girls softball game with Thompson last Monday, which was moved to THS after originally being a home date, has been postponed to Monday, May 8. Times have been yet to be determined. In its place, the team traveled to Minot for indoor games with the Larimore Polar Bears Monday and Northern Lights on Tuesday under the practice bubble at MSU’s Herb Parker Stadium. A brief recap of tho...

  • First Pitch: Cards start spring in Minot with 17-0 win over South Prairie/Max

    Erik Gjovik|Apr 24, 2023

Sometimes, you just have to go where the grass is greener, even if it is artificial. And sunny to the tune of mid-to-high 50-degrees, and no snow on the field to speak of. The Carrington baseball team finally got their spring underway, and did it with style after spending several weeks cooped up indoors in the wrestling room's batting cage. And it looks as if the Cards could be a contender again in Region 3, if a 17-0 combined no-hitter against the South Prairie/Max Royals at Corbett Field in...
