It's a small sample size, but the statistics have been mind-blowing thus far for the Carrington Cardinal baseball team. After two games in the books, the Cards' collective batting average is .424 (14-for-33 in both contests), their earned run average is 0.00, and they've struck out 24 batters in 10 innings. CHS kept their roll on with a 15-0 Region 3 victory over the SNR Black Sox Tuesday afternoon at Jim Johnson Park in New Rockford. For the second straight game, Grady Shipman drew the start on...
The Harvey-Wells County varsity track and field team recently attended the Bison Stampede Indoor Meet on the campus of North Dakota State University. The Hornets found some very good competition, with many Class A teams as well as an abundance of Minnesota teams competing. The meet took place on Thursday, April 13. HWC highlights for the day included a photo finish in the 60-meter hurdles where the top three finishers all ran an 8.58. After review of the photo, it was determined that there was...

The CHS baseball team will travel to Velva today (April 24) for a 4:30 p.m. varsity/JV doubleheader with the Aggies. Also, the softball team’s scheduled home date with the Thompson Tommies on that day has been moved from Carrington to Thompson, due to the local field not being in playable condition. It will start at 4 p.m.; varsity followed by JV. (Correction: In last week’s Independent, the sponsor of the home Tuesday track meet which was canceled was misidentified. The event in question was the Carrington Sports Boosters Meet, which was to...

Temperatures outside are climbing into the 40's and 50's and heralding the late arrival of spring in North Dakota, but snow on much of the state's athletic fields are still hanging on for dear life. In Carrington, the complications of that snow, still over a foot-and-a-half high in spots, have led to the postponement of the start of three sports seasons. Though the Cardinal track team has gotten in two indoor meets in Fargo so far, their outdoor season will have to wait for at least one more...

A split squad of Harvey-Wells County Hornets made the long trek to Bowman to compete in the Bowman County Invite on Tuesday, April 11. Many of the teams competing came from the eastern part of North Dakota, where the snow was still two-plus feet deep on their practice and competition facilities. Tallen Thorson led HWC on the day, as the sophomore qualified in both the 110 and the 300-meter hurdles, winning both of the events in the process. Gabe Allmaras had a great first meet, as the senior...
The winter that steadfastly refuses to end has led to local high school track teams backfilling their schedules with indoor meets. Carrington's boys and girls traveled to NDSU's Shelly Ellig complex Friday, March 31, for the second straight week, this time to participate in the Bison Snowbird Meet. Both Cardinal squads placed eighth in their respective team races, taking on a field mostly composed of Fargo-area Class A schools, the two Grand Forks programs and a few Minnesota teams. Like they...
I would like to thank you for the great coverage in your March 27 issue of the MPB Thunder basketball team. You were very generous with stories and great photos that help reveal the hard-fought efforts of this team. The Harvey-Wells County Hornet track and field team found their way to the Minot State University Dome in Minot where they competed in the CNDC Indoor Invitational Track and Field Meet on Friday, March 31. The Hornet Boys finished in seventh place and the girls in eighth place, as 18 boys and 14 girls teams scored on the day. Tallen Thorson was the only event...
North Dakota State University track and field athlete Payton Smith, son of Kyle and Layne Smith of Carrington, has made a name for himself in one of the sport's quirkier events. Smith just completed his indoor season for the Bison, and now hits the outdoor circuit as a 2,000 and 3,000-meter steeplechase specialist. So far, he has done very well in the green and yellow, having completed two spring events. On March 18, Smith competed at the University of South Florida in Tampa at the USF Bulls Inv...
Ahead of the 2023 spring outdoor track season, Carrington's Logan Weninger decided to get a leg up on his competition. For the past few months, the speedy Cardinal junior has been competing as an unattached athlete in collegiate indoor meets, as there is no officially-sanctioned high school season in North Dakota. Weninger's head start paid off with two individual event victories at the State Class B Indoor Track Meet at NDSU's Shelly Ellig Indoor Track and Field Facility, and he also anchored...
On paper, the city of Carrington is a Class B town. But if you delve deep into the history of wrestling in the Central City, it started, at least at the high school level, as a Class A program. It's in that spirit that the Pitcrew youth wrestling team takes on opposing city programs orders of magnitude larger than they are in dual competition, and not only survives, but thrives in some cases. Not to mention, they do pretty well individually, too. The Pitcrew, along with other older Carrington...

Ten activities and their past seasons were granted time for recognition, with each team's coach or advisor speaking on the successes their respective students enjoyed. Five additional sports that played last spring were also honored. Plaques were given to all seniors who...

Even if just for the first half, the big stage didn't affect the M-P-B Thunder one single bit. After 16 minutes had elapsed, Coach Bob Young's club was right there with the third-seeded Beulah Miners, enjoying a 21-19 lead. The size and physicality of the Miners wore the Thunder down in the third quarter, and the lid on the rim closed shut as part of a massive run for the Region 7 champions to take a 48-31 win in the quarterfinal round Thursday, March 16, at the Bismarck Event Center. "We came...
Josh Moser was feeling the luck of the Irish in the Friday, March 17 consolation semifinals. In contrast to his frustrating opening round game in which he scored just five points, the basket was looking big for the M-P-B senior point guard in the first half. Moser shot 11-for-11 from the floor and finished 13-for-15 while scoring 34 points, but Powers Lake/Burke Central’s Tyson Enget and his teammates were equally up to the task. The Region 8-winning Ranchers matched the Thunder in a very c...
