    Erik Gjovik|Feb 27, 2023

Two programs fated to be part of the to-be-minted Region 2 of Division A next season got an early start on a new league rivalry Thursday night, February 16, in Thompson. Carrington's final regular season game pitted the Cardinals against a perennially-talented Tommies program with all the tools to compete for this year's Class B Region 2 crown. If not for a few hiccups, the Cards may have pulled off one of the team's bigger upsets in a few years, but witnessed the home squad make the plays late...

  • Survive. . . and advance

    Erik Gjovik|Feb 27, 2023

Carrington's planned Monday night, February 20 finale with Napoleon/Gackle-Streeter in the first round of the Region 3 Girls' Basketball Tournament in Jamestown didn't materialize. Instead, the winter weather demons had their say, and pushed the Cards/Imperials game to Tuesday afternoon, February 21, and did even more damage to the best-laid designs of statewide tournament organizers. It didn't end up throwing the Cards off too much, as they put together a workmanlike effort to dispatch N-G-S,...

  • Rebels finish M-P-B's year in Region 3 opener

    Erik Gjovik|Feb 27, 2023

It was enough of a chore for M-P-B to just get off uncontested shots in their 56-23 loss to the Edgeley-Kulm-Montpelier Rebels in the Region 3 opening round. Following a semi-competitive first quarter, the Rebels blew the Thunder out of the water with a 22-2 run in the second quarter to win going away. Allison Thomas led the Thunder (11-12 for the year) with seven points. No other player had more than three for M-P-B. E-K-M (17-5) made use of the hot shooting hand of Kiara Jangula, as she scored...

    Erik Gjovik|Feb 27, 2023

Carrington's brand-new girls' wrestling program took home some hardware in the first-ever State Girls' Dual Tournament Saturday, February 18. Coach Mark Pazdernik's girls won one of their three matches at the Fargodome, and brought home sixth place from a field dominated with Class A schools and co-ops aside from themselves and Central Cass. Erik Gjovik|Feb 20, 2023

Nearly 60 years after the last basketball season under three divisions in North Dakota went into the history books, and over several decades of speculation and debate on the topic, a three-class system will be returning in 2023-24. The North Dakota High School Activities Association (NDHSAA) Board of Directors, on a unanimous 10-0 vote, agreed to implement the plan that would create Divisions AA, A and B for basketball in the state. Erik Gjovik|Feb 20, 2023

Central Cass, the region dual champs, repeated their win in the individual event with 224 points, followed by the Fargo Stingers with 194 in...

  • Region streak finishes at 21 for Cards; defeat G-M Titans

    Erik Gjovik|Feb 20, 2023

The final year of Class B basketball as North Dakotans presently know it, also sees the last year of an impressive run of sustained excellence. Carrington earned their latest trip to the Region 3 Tournament starting today (February 20) at the Jamestown Civic Center with a 49-23 win over Griggs/Midkota Monday evening, February 13. It marked the 21st consecutive year that the Cards have qualified for regional play under longtime Head Coach Andy Braaten, a streak that now ends with the program's...

  • Loboes upset CHS in double overtime in semifinals

    Erik Gjovik|Feb 20, 2023

Not to be harsh, but one could have built a sturdy mortar-bonded structure with the offerings Carrington was tossing up at the foul line and from the field in their District 5 semifinal against LaMoure/Litchville-Marion. The Cards hit barely over 25 percent of their free throws at 5-for-19, and empty-handed possessions in regulation and in the two overtime periods led to a 48-44 loss to the Loboes Saturday night, February 11, at the Jamestown Civic Center. "Our shooting struggles, especially...

In opening round action, Vanessa Vollmer was the leading scorer for the Titans with six points, and Kaylee Johnson...

  • Thunder qualify for Region 3 tourney

    Erik Gjovik|Feb 20, 2023

M-P-B's journey through the District 6 Tournament in Napoleon didn't make the ESPN SportsCenter Top 10 like Napoleon/Gackle-Streeter's overtime semifinal winner over Linton-HMB did. But the Thunder did enough without too much flair to earn qualification to the Region 3 Tournament, which starts today (February 20) in Jamestown. The Thunder will be the District 6 fourth seed following wins of 34-25 over South Border in first round play, and 51-34 at the expense of Strasburg-Zeeland in the region...

  • CHS boys earn #2 seed, beat E-K-M

    Erik Gjovik|Feb 20, 2023

Save for one game, the Carrington Cardinals took care of business in the District 5 season. A 47-39 win over Edgeley-Kulm-Montpelier in the East Gym on February 9 wasn't the most crisp performance by his team, but Coach Tim Ranum acknowledged the heightened urgency the late season games bring to the table. More importantly, it secured the number two seed in the District 5 tourney for the Cards, who improved to 11-7 and 5-1 with the victory over the Rebels. "It had kind of a postseason feel in th...

The Hornets, behind a 9-2 run to start the second...
