Jubilation and excitement rocked the East Gym Friday, February 3, as the Carrington Cardinals secured their first win at the East Region Girls' Dual Wrestling Tournament with a pin in the last match from Ashley Lindberg to defeat the Fargo Stingers, 42-40, in first round action. The win prompted Head Coach Mark Pazdernik to lift assistant coach Kip Kovar off the ground in celebration. Wrestler Kennedy Wendel, right, is also pictured....
On occasion, the significance of the moment finds the unlikeliest of heroes. In the inaugural East Region Girls' Dual Wrestling Tournament, competitors from first-year program Carrington got a crash course in the emotions and sense of accomplishment that a well-fought match can bring out. CHS's Ashley Lindberg lived that euphoria following three minutes and 36 seconds of tension on the mat. With her team trailing the Fargo Stingers in the opening round, 40-36, Lindberg put on the headgear and...
Carrington had their chances to make the State B Dual Tournament with either a championship or runner-up finish at the Region 2 championships in Harvey. However, a painfully-close 36-33 loss in the semifinal round to the Pembina Co. North Grizzlies meant that the fate of that tournament berth was temporarily in others' hands. If PCN were to advance to the finals and upset top seed Central Cass, that would have allowed the Cards to challenge the Squirrels for the final spot. Unfortunately for CHS...
The HWC boys basketball team played another stellar schedule this week, with three games against quality opponents. The Hornets opened the week up with a comeback effort that fell two points short against Dunseith, while the remainder of the week proved to be much better as the Hornets continued to improve on their balanced play, defeating Carrington and St. John, both on the road. Upcoming action has the Hornets paired against NR-S and Warwick in more super regional action, determining postseas...
The HWC girls' basketball team continues to improve on the season, although their season record may not reflect that improved play. The Hornets picked up their third regional win this past week with an outstanding offensive and defensive effort against North Star on the road. The win moves them to 3-5 with just two games remaining in regional play. HWC ran into a very hot Carrington team this past Monday, as the Cardinals hit 10 three-pointers in the game, including eight in the all-important...
One team was looking to maintain positive momentum into the postseason, while another was in need of a confidence booster against a quality opponent. The NR-S Rockets, still licking their wounds after a 31-point loss to Langdon/Edmore/Munich two nights prior, entered their makeup game with rival Carrington with the intent of playing good basketball even if they failed to spring the upset. On that count, the Rockets are still looking for answers, with not much time before the start of the Region...
There was almost too much star power in the Carrington East Gym Friday, February 3. The East Region girls' wrestling tournament concluded just in time for the fourth-ranked Sargent County Bulldogs boys' basketball team to invade the larger gymnasium to take on the Cards. And the undefeated Bulldogs remained that way, riding a 13-point advantage after the end of the first quarter to leave town with a 58-42 victory over CHS. Carter Hosford led Sargent Co. (15-0) with 16 points, and Luke Martinson...

At the top of District 6, it certainly appears that the upcoming tournament wars will likely come down to the wire, with three teams going tooth and nail for that all-important top seed in Region 3. With a 59-54 win over the M-P-B Thunder on February 2, South Border showed they belong in the conversation of the district's contendership short list. The Mustangs bumped their record to 10-5 overall and 3-0 in the district with the victory, while the Thunder's record fell to 9-4 and 2-2 at the...

Girls’ Basketball Thursday, February 2 M-P-B 52, Lisbon 49 A fourth quarter which featured 44 combined points added some spice to what was then a low-scoring game, and the M-P-B Thunder came out on top for their ninth win of the season. Junior Allison Thomas scored at least five points in every period but the third, and had three-pointers on three trips down the floor to finish with a team-best 19 points. Maddie Gefroh had 11 points, six of those in the pivotal fourth quarter for the Thunder. Kyra Haecherl scored 14 points for Lisbon (5-13), a...
The Harvey-Wells County girls hit a tough part of their schedule as they matched up against the Langdon/Edmore/Munich Cardinals and the Kidder County Wolves in this past week's girls' basketball action. The opponents had a combined record of 21-8, and both the Cardinals and the Wolves are considered as top contenders in their respective regions. The Hornets dropped both games by considerable margins, but hopefully gained some valuable experience during their play. L/E/M 70, HWC 25 A 14-0 start...
The New Rockford-Sheyenne Rockets hosted the District 6, Region 3 Medina/Pingree-Buchanan Thunder. After the Rockets' recent losses against the Carrington Cardinals and the North Prairie Cougars, they were itching for a win. The Rockets came out in the first quarter, scoring 11 points against the Thunder, only allowing them to score a total of eight points. With five drives to the basket by Kelsie Belquist in the second quarter, along with 3-pointers from Kaiya O'Connor and Katie Allmaras, the...
A familiar face enveloped in her now-trademark rugby headgear met up again with the Carrington Cardinals. Shiloh Christian senior All-State forward Hailey Quam, two years removed from facing the Cards in the 2021 State B Tournament as a member of the Wilton-Wing Miners, brought her Skyhawks into battle once again with the team in red and white Saturday, February 4. SCS, the sixth-ranked team in Class B at 15-2 coming into their game with Carrington, made full use of 16 points from Quam in a 66-5...
An updated draft proposal for a three-class basketball system in the state was released by the North Dakota High School Activities Association (NDHSAA) for school administration and athletic directors' consumption and review. The NDHSAA, upon consultation with legal counsel, made several minor changes to the previous plan presented before the board, and unveiled a 22-page document on Friday, January 27, which details some of the specifics of the draft proposal. If the governing body plans to...
Trace Hoggarth appears to be hitting his stride on the mats at the exact right time. The senior 120-pounder for Carrington went a perfect 3-0 to win his weight class at the East-West Classic in New Salem Friday-Saturday, January 27-28, in what represents the final regular season tournament for statewide Class B wrestlers. Hoggarth was one of three placers for the Cards, who placed 12th as a team with 64 team points. Lisbon cruised to another tournament crown, scoring 221 points and...
The first year of the CHS girls' wrestling program is rapidly coming to a close, with things coming to a head at the final regular season tournament, Casselton's Belle of the Brawl event Saturday, January 26. The Cards crowned one champion, Trisa Schroeder at 145 pounds, and had two others, Taya Lura (105) and Mercedes Lura (120) finish as runners-up at the tournament. In the team standings, the Cards' 93 points earned them seventh place overall, third among Class B programs behind host Central...
The Carrington girls’ wrestling team put their destiny in their own hands Friday, February 3, and hosted the first-ever East Region Dual Tournament in the East Gym. First-round matchups pitted Central Cass against Pembina Co. North, and Lisbon taking on the Grand Forks (Central/Red River) Knightriders, and the second opening round session featured South Border versus West Fargo United (WFHS/Horace/Sheyenne) and host CHS wrestling Fargo. All first round duals began at 100 pounds. Semifinals a...
In last week's Independent, a three-way tiebreaker scenario was explained, where the Carrington girls' basketball team could still earn a number one District 5 seed even with a narrow loss to E-K-M, and if Oakes were to win their final two games. Turns out, the Cards were in no mood to do the math. With a 49-41 win over the Rebels, Carrington rendered that point moot, finishing with a perfect six wins in six outings in district play and earning a first-round bye in next week's tournament in...

Sometimes, that first taste of success can be contagious. The Griggs/Midkota Titan girls, in the midst of an 0-14 start to the season, had some close calls along the way, but the dam finally burst in their favor in a big way Monday night, January 30. G-M rolled over a completely outmatched Barnes County North team with 20-point quarters in each period of play, and got their first victory of the winter, 88-11. Kaylee Johnson camped inside for much of the contest, and put down numerous...

Say what one will about the Carrington boys' basketball team's season thus far, but one thing is for sure: They are never boring. Down six with over half of the fourth quarter to go, Carrington made the plays down the stretch to take an emotional one-point thriller, 41-40, over the LaMoure/Litchville-Marion Loboes on the road Friday night, Janaury 27. "It was a big win, as we get to control our destiny in the district and try and cinch up a number two seed with a win or two next week," Head...
