    Erik Gjovik|Jan 23, 2023

    Erik Gjovik|Jan 23, 2023

The Medina/Pingree-Buchanan Thunder girls have hit a rough patch of their 2022-23 schedule, and are mired in a six-game losing streak. The Thunder took two competitive defeats to a pair of respectable District 5 opponents in LaMoure/Litchville-Marion, 35-31, and Edgeley-Kulm-Montpelier, 47-37. Game action with L-L-M was close throughout, though the Loboes did not make their own lives easier with a very poor 10-for-28 performance at the free-throw stripe which included 0-for-7 in the fourth...

  • Running Hornets race past DP, 76-41

    Lane Moellenkamp|Jan 23, 2023

It took the whole first quarter to get it going, but once the Harvey-Wells County Hornets got into their run-and-gun game, they dominated the remaining three quarters and brought home a 76-41 victory over the Dakota Prairie Knights in Fessenden on Monday, January 16. The super regional matchup started with a slower-paced game, one that the Hornets prefer not to have. Keaton Keller and Tate Grossman scored six for HWC and Caden Joramo scored eight for Dakota Prairie as the Hornets led, 14-11,...

Here's the buzz. The New Rockford-Sheyenne Rockets traveled to Fessenden on Tuesday, Jan. 10 to take on Super Region 4 competitors, the Harvey/Wells County Hornets, in their nest. After losing to H/WC at the annual CNDC tournament back on Dec. 1, the Rockets knew they had to work harder to push past them. Kelsie Belquist and Kaiya O'Connor blasted out of the gates for the Rockets, with Belquist swishing two field goals and a free-throw and O'Connor swishing one field goal and one 3-pointer....

  • M-P-B runners-up at SCT; Cards defeat G-M for fifth

    Erik Gjovik|Jan 16, 2023

If the Ellendale Cardinals shoot like they did at this year’s Stutsman County Tournament, there most likely won’t be a Region 3 program that can hang with them come postseason time. The back-to-back tournament title-winners made it a three-peat with a 69-52 win over the M-P-B Thunder Saturday night, January 7, at the Jamestown Civic Center, on the strength of 11 three-pointers. And that wasn’t even their best long-range shooting night of the tourney, as EHS drained 14 trifectas in a 72-47 win o...

    Lane Moellenkamp|Jan 16, 2023

The Rugby Panthers outscored Harvey-Wells County by 10 in the second quarter, and then needed double overtime to defeat the Hornets, 68-62, in Rugby on Friday, January 6. The Hornets had the hot hand to begin the game, as Tate Grossman knocked down two treys and Gabe Allmaras made another, helping HWC to a 9-4 lead with just 1:30 off the clock. The strong inside work of the Panthers' Brody Schneibel, who scored seven, and the versatility of Erik Foster, who chipped in with four more, gave Rugby...

  • CHS keeps on truckin'

    Nathan Price and Erik Gjovik|Jan 16, 2023

On Thursday, January 5, the Carrington Cardinals kept their winning ways going with a dominant 66-20 victory over the Cardinals of Ellendale. Carrington, by now well known for their full-court pressure, stuck to what's been working for them on Thursday, and Ellendale couldn't cope. CHS piled on the pressure all game long, rendering Ellendale incapable of generating consistent offense. Carrington juniors Madison Johnson and Kacie Rexin were a particularly sharp thorn in their side, as the two of...

Taya Hornberger connected on a three-pointer, and Ashtyn Smith added two more and a two-and-one as Smith scored 10 and...

  • Cards get second straight win over Titans

    Erik Gjovik|Jan 16, 2023

As the luck of the schedule maker would have it, it took three full days before Carrington and Griggs/Midkota renewed acquaintances. Fresh off the Cards’ 55-44 win in the consolation championship in the Stutsman County Tournament, the Cards and Titans locked up once again, this time in a District 5 counter at the East Gym. A 13-1 run for Carrington set the tone right from the whistle, and they withstood an early spurt of the Titans’ own to take a 24-point victory, 61-37, and improve to 2-0 in di...

  • Grapplers sweep Cass trianguar; fall to Broncos, beat Napoleon

    Erik Gjovik|Jan 16, 2023

The Carrington boys wrestlers didn't win all four of their duals in last week's worth of triangulars in Casselton (January 5) and Lisbon (January 10), but they took the most important ones. In a Region 2 three-team dual meet, the Cards took a 35-33 squeaker over the Central Cass Squirrels and a 51-30 win against HWC to keep their regional dual record perfect at 4-0 for the winter. CHS didn't have much of any luck against the Class B power Lisbon Broncos five nights later, falling in 51-30...

Another match with East Region implications followed, as CHS took on West Fargo United, a co-op of the three West Fargo high schools (WFHS, Sheyenne and Horace)....

  • Skadberg, Schroeder reach Rumble podium for girls

    Erik Gjovik|Jan 9, 2023

As Minnesota schools were dominating the boys' varsity and JV divisions at the Rumble on the Red in Fargo, the home state girls were representing quite well in their portion of the mega-tournament. Nine of the top 10 schools, led by Bismarck High's 206 points, were from North Dakota, and the Flickertail State grabbed the top four podium positions. Carrington's first-year girls program had two wrestlers make placement matches, and the team came in 14th place overall with 74 points. Junior Kylie S...
