On Thursday, Dec. 29, the Carrington Cardinals traveled to Pingree to take on the Medina-Pingree/Buchanan Thunder in what was an intense basketball game from start to finish. Early on, it was clear that both teams would be playing with intensity as they fought to take down one of their rivals. For the Thunder, Thursday's game was their first of the 2022-23 season. The Cardinals, though, had already played three games before they arrived at Pingree, and had won all of them. Both teams were...
The Griggs/Midkota Titans hoped to build on the momentum of their two-point win over NR-S 10 days earlier, and returned to the hardwood post-Christmas with a nonregion contest against Dakota Prairie on December 30. And a hot start for the Titan shooters helped them accomplish that aim, with a 55-35 win over the Knights in Binford thanks to double-digit scoring nights by Eli Larson and Brady Haugen. Larson scored a team-high 14 points, all on two-point field goals, and Haugen splashed in two...
The holiday break for the HWC boys basketball team was short-lived, as the Hornets found themselves paired up with the Towner-Granville-Upham (TGU) Titans and the Parshall/North Shore-Plaza Braves. The Hornets also found a couple of wins and some needed playing time during the games, as they defeated the Titans by eight and the Braves by 19. HWC 54, TGU 46 The Hornets and Titans met on Friday, December 30 for a non-regional boys basketball matchup at Harvey High School. A 11-2 run late in the...
Carrington's pressure defense forced 16 total steals, and converted time and time again in transition to earn a 74-16 win over Griggs/Midkota Friday night, December 30, at the East Gym. The first District 5 game for either side was a makeup game originally scheduled for December 15, but postponed due to weather. Haley Wolsky led all players with 22 points, with much of that coming off steals and quick baskets. Olivia Threadgold had 11 points and five rebounds, and Edyn Hoornaert finished with...
Only a few minutes into the third quarter of their mid-Christmas break matchup with Langdon/Edmore/Munich at the East Gym, Carrington found themselves staring up at a six-point deficit, 28-22. Nothing that a 19-0 outburst can't cure. The central Cards fired up the afterburners and zoomed past the far northern redbirds for an impressive 41-34 win over L/E/M to keep their flawless record of 7-0 intact. CHS' final score was deceptively close, as the visitor Cardinals got two three-pointers late....
Harvey-Wells County came out of the locker room with renewed energy, outscoring Mohall-Lansford-Sherwood 35-21 in the second half and claiming a 63-51 victory over the Mavericks in Mohall on Tuesday, January 3. The first quarter was a three-point shooting extravaganza on both sides, as Riley Morlock and Kellan Henry connected on two each for MLS and Brock Fike drained three for HWC. Morlock's second trey gave the Mavericks their largest lead of the night at 17-9, but back-to-back threes from Fik...
Randy Peterson's extensive career on the bowling lanes continues, with yet another two instances of greatness. Peterson completed a perfect 300 game for the 19th time, turning the trick in the eighth game of 12 total at the North Dakota Bowling Proprietors Association (NDBPA) State Scratch Team event at Dickinson's Paragon Bowl in early December. His scratch score of 2,662 was good enough for sixth place individually, but he combined with three others to win the state team title for "ND Storm"...

In the entirety of their high school volleyball careers, Kadyn Mehring of Carrington and Megan Moser of Medina never so much as played in a state Class B tournament. They certainly made up for that shortfall when they went to the collegiate level and suited up for the University of Jamestown program. Four years later for Mehring and two for Moser, the pair are basking in the glory of the Jimmies' first-ever National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) national championship team...
It wasn't always efficient, but the Carrington Cardinal boys got the job done in the end in their third outing of the season. Behind senior Jack Erickson's 16 points, the Cards took home a 56-40 nonregion win over the visiting Dakota Prairie Knights in the East Gym Tuesday night, December 20. Erickson used his lanky, long-armed 6'2" frame to get to the basket on several trips down the floor courtesy of nifty backdoor passing plays. Forward Hudson Schmitz scored 12 points with a solid inside...
The New Rockford-Sheyenne Rockets hosted the Griggs-Midkota Lady Titans on Monday, December 19 for their first home game of the season. Out of the floodgates, the Titans were under full court pressure by the Rockets. This led to many...
Unlike the night before where the New Rockford-Sheyenne girls took down the Griggs-Midkota Lady Titans, 75-29, the matchup of the NR-S boys' basketball team and the Griggs-Midkota boys' basketball team was more of a nailbiter. Like a flash of lightning, they were off, as a three-pointer was swished by Brady Haugen for the Titans. Not even seconds later, another three swished, this time by Griggs-Midkota senior, Benjamin Edland. The Titans scored many points from beyond the arc throughout the...

Almost half a week's worth of being stuck in their houses, while over two feet of snow dumped on the state in some places, made the Carrington Cardinal basketball teams more than a bit stir crazy. The release of that pent-up energy showed in a Saturday, December 17, matinee doubleheader in the East Gym with nonregion opponent Benson County. CHS' girls started the afternoon with a 64-13 rout over the Wildcats to improve to 5-0 on the season, and the boys won their second game in as many outings,...

Try as they might, the Carrington girls' basketball team couldn't find that extra gear to pull away from the Four Winds-Minnewaukan Lady Indians. Nursing a 12-point lead at one point, the shots went ice-cold for the Cards late, and FW-M hit a few clutch baskets to make it interesting, cutting down to a two-possession game late. Still, it meant Carrington's hot streak to begin the season remained intact, thanks to a 48-44 win over the Indians to improve to 6-0 on the season. "Our shooting was...
