It all came together at the end of the year for the Carrington volleyball team. Two straight wins over Strasburg-Zeeland and LaMoure/Litchville-Marion at the Region 3 Tournament at Napoleon have the Cardinals on the cusp of their first state tournament appearance since 2013. "The girls are playing strong and fearless," said Head Coach Megan Trautman. "They're working so well together, enjoying each and every moment, and just really buckling down on defense. We've had a good flow defensively, and...
It can be downright difficult to make a name for yourself in the ultra-competitive Region 3, but the M-P-B Thunder certainly tried. Coming into play for the penultimate tournament before the State B event in Bismarck, a grand total of six different teams had at least 22 victories before they stepped on the court at Napoleon High School last Monday. The Thunder were matched up with District 5 runner-up Oakes in the nightcap November 7, and every last ounce of fight that M-P-B squeezed out...
The motto, “It’s not how you start but how you finish”, really held true for the North Star Bearcats and the Harvey-Wells County Hornets in the opening round of the Region 4 Volleyball Tournament. The Bearcats finished the first two games in that fashion on their way to defeating the Hornets, 3-0, on Monday, November 7, at the Devils Lake Sports Center and end the Hornets’ volleyball season. The Hornets would be the team that started the night with the hot hand, as Ashley Keller’s two kills propelled HWC to an early 6-2 advantage. The Bearcats...

The Pitcrew had one individual champion, Landin Clifton, at the event. Clifton won the nine-and-under (9U) 77-lb. weight class in Denver. Other placers at the event were as follows: • Nic Garber: third place, 12U 130 lbs. • Gabe Clifton: fourth place, 13U 116 lbs. • Charles Jorge...
One remarkable streak of sustained excellence for the Carrington volleyball program went by the wayside at the District 5 Tournament at Barnes County North School in Leal, but a much more important one lives on. For every year since they moved to District 5 from their old home of District 7, the Cards have played in the tournament championship match, a string dating back to 2015. This year, however, CHS had to qualify for the Region 3 Tournament in Napoleon through the back door, following a...
A tough season for the Griggs/Midkota Titans, which came with an emergency coaching change part way through the schedule, came to an end in the qualifying round at the District 5 Tournament at Barnes County North. The Titans dropped their first match to Carrington (see related story) on Thursday, October 27, then kept their season alive with a win in the Friday loser-out match against the host Bison (25-14, 27-25, 25-22). Last Monday, with a Region 3 berth on the line, the Ed...
Seeded third going into the District 6 Tournament in Ashley, the Medina/Pingree-Buchanan Thunder rebounded from a semifinal setback to make their way back to the Region 3 Tourney. The Thunder opened with a three-set win over the #6 seed Kidder County Wolves (26-24, 25-9, 25-20) Friday, October 28, behind 14 kills and 24 digs from junior outside hitter Allison Thomas. Combining for 14 kills as well were Brynn Sorenson and Maddie Gefroh, and Sorenson also had 20 digs for M-P-B. Kidder County...
The latest three-class high school basketball proposal hit its stated threshold of statewide support from school districts on October 26, and is expected to be voted on within days. A focus group represented by Valley City Superintendent Josh Johnson has managed to garner over 75 letters of support for the plan, which would create a middle class (Class A) between the current Class A (AA under the new alignment) and Class B. The North Dakota High School Activities Association (NDHSAA) Board of...
The drives back and forth on Highway 281, along with being a multi-sport fall athlete and full-time student, didn't deter Carrington High School senior Jack Paulson from accomplishing the highest individual honor bestowed by another high school's athletic team. Jack, the son of Matt and Tiffany Paulson, has been named Most Valuable Player for the Jamestown Blue Jays boys' soccer team for the 2022 season. Playing for Head Coach Brandi Harty, Paulson finished his three-season varsity career for...
The Hornets' final week of the regular season was a busy one, with the team playing three matches and being on the road for two of them. HWC started the week off with a four-game victory over Four Winds-Minnewaukan, and ended the week with a sweep of Dunseith, both on the road. Smashed in the middle was a five-game marathon which saw the Central McLean Cougars come from two games down to steal a victory over HWC in Fessenden. HWC 3, FW-M 1 Strong starts to the first two games propelled the...
Carrington sophomore Kenadie Pazdernik earned All-State designation for the Cardinals by placing seventh overall in the girls' race at the 2022 State Class B Cross Country Meet at Parkhurst Recreation Area north of Jamestown. Chuck Foreman, a mainstay of the legendary Minnesota Vikings teams of the middle 1970s and a three-time Super Bowl participant, took time to visit with fans and sign autographs at Headlocks Bar in Carrington Saturday, October 22. Here, Foreman is pictured with Headlocks owner Dennis Freeman and his wife, Karmen. Foreman, who just celebrated his 72nd birthday last Wednesday, played for the Vikings from 1973 to 1979, and finished his career with the New England Patriots in 1980. He was drafted as...
Historically, the final match of the season for the Carrington volleyball team has proved one to be very hard to pencil in as a sure thing. A pair of set victories might have given the Cardinals a false sense of complacency, one that the M-P-B Thunder was all to eager to exploit. When their backs were against the wall, the Thunder never said die, and rallied for a stirring 3-2 (21-25, 19-25, 25-18, 25-20, 15-13) victory to finish up the regular season for both teams ahead of their district tourn...

According to NR-S Coach Sara Myhre, the Rockets decided to make this change due to needing another...
Two University of Jamestown volleyball players with local ties have made strong contributions to the Jimmies' continued success. Senior outside hitter Kadyn Mehring and junior defensive specialist Megan Moser have seen extensive court time for the U of J, currently ranked second in the NAIA poll and owning a 25-2 overall record, 12-1 in the Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC). Mehring has appeared in eight matches this season and 19 sets. She has 30 kills, a rate of 1.6 per set, and a...
Minnesota State University Moorhead linebacker Kaden Wolsky, son of Kevin and Jennifer Wolsky of Carrington, has made his presence felt for the Dragons football program. Kaden, standing at 6'1" and 235 pounds, has made a total of 12 tackles in eight games, with eight solo and four assisted stops. He has one tackle for loss for three yards, that recorded against Minnesota-Duluth on October 1. His two top performances came in games against Bemidji State (46-7 loss) with three solo tackles, and...
At Parkhurst Recreation Area Friday, October 21, Carrington sophomore Kenadie Pazdernik had another strong finishing kick to conclude a successful season on area courses. Pazdernik, who took 12th among all girls' runners last season, improved that standing to seventh with a final time of 20 minutes, 3.25 seconds at the State Class B Meet held north of Jamestown. The team races at the 2022 meet belonged to the present dynasties. The Rugby Panthers won their fourth consecutive girls' championship...
Carrington concluded their District 5 season with four wins in six total matches, and are slated to be the number three seed in the upcoming tournament in Leal starting this Thursday. The Cardinals ended league play with a 3-0 (25-13, 25-20, 25-13) win over Griggs/Midkota last Monday night, October 17, following another three-set sweep four nights earlier over Kidder County by the count of 25-14, 25-15 and 25-20. Intra-regional play against Kidder County saw the return of the annual "Pink...
No matter the language, the Griggs/Midkota Titans faced a few lupine-named opponents in their week's worth of matches on the court. The Titans fell in a District 5 match to the top-seeded LaMoure/Litchville-Marion Loboes, 17-25, 18-25 and 9-25, on Friday night, October 14 in LaMoure, then dropped three sets in a loss to the Wolves of Kidder County, 23-25, 13-25, 10-25, last Tuesday evening in Glenfield. Statistics from the matches were not available, but will be printed in next week's...
In Glenfield Thursday night, October 13, the M-P-B Thunder got their 20th win of the season with a 25-20, 25-5 and 25-14 blanking of the Griggs/Midkota Titans on the volleyball floor. Allison Thomas led the Thunder (20-9 overall) with 12 kills and 26 digs. The M-P-B service line was also effective with 14 total aces in the match, and Maddie Gefroh's left-handed serve was an outsized part of that with six aces on her own. Gefroh also had a good match up front for the Thunder offense with 10...
One shot, and one opportunity for the Carrington Cardinals to break through to the Class 11B playoffs presented itself Friday night, October 14 in Langdon. But their postseason dreams effectively came to a crashing halt almost from the opening kickoff, as Langdon/Edmore/Munich made six takeaways and were brutally efficient with their short fields given to them to end CHS' season at 3-5 with a 42-0 shutout. The loss put an end to a late-season resurgence by Carrington, who started the year 0-4...
