  • HWC Volleyball Preview: Three starters return for HWC

    Lane Moellenkamp|Aug 29, 2022

Hornet volleyball is alive and well at Harvey-Wells County. HWC returns three starters from last year's squad that went 12-14-4 overall. The loss of several key starters to graduation make this more of a rebuilding season, but Coach Kristi Fike is looking forward to the challenge. Returning players who saw action a year ago for the Hornets include seniors Emma Dockter, Larissa Arnold and Kayme Bartz. Dockter had 235 digs, 63 kills and 34 aces, Arnold had 42 kills and 48 digs, while Bartz...

  • Girls' golfers continue string of third places

    Erik Gjovik|Aug 29, 2022

When Kindred and Oak Grove have been ruling your golf region for many a year, a third place finish in any meet is a realistic goal to pursue. Carrington got their fourth straight "bronze" to start the fall girls' season, as they competed at Fargo Country Club on Monday, August 15, and at Enderlin two days later. In Enderlin, junior Kacie Rexin, the only placer for the Cards in Fargo, came in third among all shooters with a score of 85. Aubrey Neis and Molly Hansen both shot 107 to take 10th and...

  • Building a new legacy

    Erik Gjovik|Aug 29, 2022

With the clock ticking down to the start of the football season in Carrington, construction crews from Seating and Athletic Facility Enterprises of Ellendale, Minn., were hard at work over a week's period to ensure that the successful opening of the so-called "Stadium '22" would happen by the time of the first varsity game of the season....

  • Veteran net squad takes court

    Erik Gjovik|Aug 22, 2022

Megan Trautman begins her third season on the Carrington volleyball bench with optimism that her Cardinal team is poised to clear the next hurdle. Last year's squad finished with a 21-8-1 overall mark, a District 5 tournament championship in five sets over LaMoure/Litchville-Marion, and a third place finish at the Region 3 Tournament in Carrington last November. With the calendar fast forwarding to today, Trautman retains a very-experienced cadre of girls trying to knock two-time defending...

The Carrington girls’ golf team officially kicked off the 2022-23 school year’s sporting slate with meets in Casselton on August 8 and Mayville two days later on August 10. The Cards placed third as a team at both meets, which are composed entirely of Region 2 schools. Two girls finished in the top 10 at Casselton, those being Kacie Rexin in third place with an 18-hole score of 81, and Aubrey Neis taking ninth at 104. In Mayville, Rexin won that meet, again shooting 81, and Neis came in eig...

  • Cards aim for playoff return in '22

    Erik Gjovik|Aug 15, 2022

The bleacher area of the to-be-inaugurated "Stadium '22" was still just a concrete slab as of this time last week, but the Carrington football program was hard at work trying to build something of their own in early practice sessions last week. CHS graduated 13 seniors from last year's 4-5 team that was in playoff contention for the fourth and final spot from Class A Region 2 until the whistle blew on the second-to-last week. Seventh-year Head Coach Kyle Smith will guide a group of Cardinals...

  • Runners gearing up for successful fall campaign

    Erik Gjovik|Aug 15, 2022

With a few returning achievers at the top of their lineup, the Carrington cross country team is poised to make some waves on area golf courses as the leaves turn. Coach Josh Kerbaugh and Assistant April Berntson have 12 total runners signed up to compete in the Cardinal red. The Cards' top returner on the girls' team is sophomore Kenadie Pazdernik, who earned All-State honors last season by placing 12th at the State Class B Meet in Jamestown last November. Senior Baylee Lura is another runner...

  • Feeling the pain: Tough draw leads to two-and-out for Post 25

    Erik Gjovik|Aug 8, 2022

"Obviously didn't have the results we were looking for," Head Coach Tim Ranum sighed, regarding his Post 25 team's latest trip to the State Class B American Legion Baseball Tournament in Garrison. Whether it was the unfortunate draw of facing two of the top three teams in their pair of losses to finish the season, miscues at inopportune times, or a young team running out of luck, it all seem to go south for the Redbirds Wednesday and Thursday, July 27-28. Post 25 ran into a power-surging...

  • Girls' golf preview: CHS kicks off fall season with talent at top, promising youth

    Erik Gjovik|Aug 8, 2022

Carrington's girls golf program achieved an eighth place finish last fall at the State 'B' Golf Tournament, and the team is primed to be another player in the Region 2 mix. Under the tutelage of second-year Coach Wayne Shipman, the Cards made strides throughout the year in shooting consistent rounds, and a good young class of golfers coming up is cause for optimism. The top returner is junior Kacie Rexin. She was the lone state qualifier by automatic score, and finished second at the regional...

  • Onward to Garrison: Post 25 qualifies for State 'B'

    Erik Gjovik|Aug 1, 2022

Don't let that barely-above .500 record fool you. It took most of the season for the Carrington John Raymond O'Hara Post 25 Redbirds to figure out their roles, and how they would translate to yet another State "B" American Legion Tournament appearance. Once everything started clicking, however, it did so in a big way. For the eighth time in nine seasons, Post 25 is headed back to the "B" with a 10-0 win in the District 4 championship over Kidder County Post 231 Thursday night, July 21, at...

  • Young guns: 10U Redbirds second at state Cal Ripken

    Erik Gjovik|Aug 1, 2022

The future of baseball in Carrington is in good hands, if the results from the 10-and-under state tournament is any indication. The 10U Redbirds placed as the runners-up for that age group in the State "B" Cal Ripken Baseball Tournament in Casselton July 21-23. Play in the tournament featured a round-robin format in two pools, played Thursday and Friday, and the top two teams from each four-team pool advanced to Saturday's bracket play. Carrington played in the very challenging RoughRider Pool,...

  • Carrington, New Rockford players join forces as Red Sox, play in 12U state tourney

    Erik Gjovik|Aug 1, 2022

With stand-alone baseball program numbers not in their favor to fly solo, Carrington and New Rockford decided to cooperate as one team for the 2022 summer season. Now named the Central Dakota Red Sox (a combination of the team names Redbirds and Black Sox), they played at the 12U State "B" Cal Ripken Baseball Tournament in Burlington, also held July 21-23, as was the 10U event. The Red Sox played in the Ripken "B" Pool, opposite opponents Park River, Casselton, and Star City (Velva). In the Cal...

  • Sitting in the driver's seat

    Erik Gjovik|Jul 25, 2022

The regular season record might not be the greatest, but you can almost set your watch to Carrington Post 25's annual postseason run through district play. The American Legion Redbirds, seeded third going into the District 4 Tournament at Jack Brown Stadium in Jamestown, snuck up on the two seeds ahead of them over three days of play July 18-20, and put themselves in prime position to advance once again to the Class B Tournament last Thursday. Game one went to Carrington over the sixth-seeded...

  • Redbirds' season ends with one win, two losses at District 6 in Oakes

    Erik Gjovik|Jul 25, 2022

The youth of the Carrington Redbirds contributed to their share of ups and downs during the 2022 season, and that roller coaster of play continued into the District 6 Tournament in Oakes. Coach Mitch Page's group won one game, a 6-4 loser-out contest with Gwinner, but were eliminated with two defeats to Ashley/Linton/Wishek and LaMoure in games played July 14-15. In the first round, the fifth-seeded 'Birds took on fourth seed A-L-W, and held a 2-1 advantage until the third inning. From that...

The team of Chris Hoff won the event with an 18-hole score of 54, or -18 under par. Additional local teams and placings included the Jeff VanRay team (15th), the Zach Johnson team (26th) and the Gaylen Rosenau team (33rd)....

  • Baseball Roundup: Carrington Post 25 and Babe Ruth hit tourney seasons

    Erik Gjovik|Jul 18, 2022

The regular season is in the books for both Carrington American Legion Post 25 and Carrington Babe Ruth Redbirds. The Legion team finished their slate of District 4 games with wins of 9-2 over the Jamestown Hawks on July 6, and 12-2 against the Nelson County Post 162 Owls on July 12. In between, the 25's faced some stiff competition at the Phil Brown Classic in Jamestown on Saturday and Sunday, July 9-10. There, they dropped 8-2 decisions to the Bismarck Governors and 6-1 to Perham, Minn. Lucas...

  • One step back, two steps forward

    Nathan Price|Jul 11, 2022

The Carrington Redbirds have been winning big or not at all. On Tuesday, June 28, Carrington traveled to Edgeley for Babe Ruth baseball, where the Redbirds were unable to overcome an offensive barrage. Tate Wolsky managed to start the scoring for Carrington after smacking a leadoff single and being driven home later in the inning. Edgeley, however, set the tone in the bottom of the first, responding with four runs of their own - thanks in large part to Redbird errors. Carrington briefly tied...

  • Coach Pitch Girl's Softball

    Jul 11, 2022

The Carrington Coach Pitch Girls' Softball team played New Rockford on Wednesday, June 29 in New Rockford....

  • Redbirds... win some, lose some

    Nathan Price|Jul 4, 2022

From Friday, June 24, through Sunday, June 26, a dozen Legion baseball teams from across the region participated in the 2022 Mid-Summer Classic in Jamestown and Valley City. Nearby teams taking part were New Rockford Post #30 and Carrington Post #25, who both had similarly up-and-down weekends. On day 1, the Redbirds got off to a hot start against Edgeley Post #146. Carrington scored five runs in the first inning, two more in each of the second and third innings, and capped off their effort with...

  • 'Birds' split vs Steele and ALW

    Nathan Price|Jul 4, 2022

On Thursday, June 23, the Redbirds' Babe Ruth squad edged out a comeback victory over Steele on the road. The game got off to a rough start for Carrington, as they were unable to find home plate in the top of the first, but allowed one runner to score in the bottom of the inning after giving up two base hits and three walks. In the innings that followed, the Birds' offense couldn't get off the ground, as they failed to earn a single hit in the first three innings, allowing Steele's slim lead to...

  • Cowboys (and girls) up!

    Erik Gjovik|Jun 27, 2022

Four local cowboys and cowgirls traveled to the capital of high school rodeo in the state, Bowman, for the 2022 North Dakota High School Rodeo Association (NDHSRA) State Finals, held June 8-12. Senior Logan Topp of Grace City qualified for the state rodeo in both tie down roping, finishing in 11th place in that event's year-end standings, and team roping, where he teamed up with Velva's Dani Fladeland to take eighth. He would make the Short Go in both events in Bowman, and had a very-fast 5.8 se...

  • Legion 'Birds struggle

    Erik Gjovik|Jun 27, 2022

It was the kind of game that most likely, would be preferred by the home squad to be purged from the memory banks. Almost nothing went according to plan for the Carrington Post 25 Redbirds in their District 4 matchup with Kidder County Post 231 on June 17 at City Park. Seven errors led to a big 12-1 rout for the visitors, which was shortened to five innings. Kidder pitcher Blake Braun gave up five hits in his mound stint. Of those, Hudson Schmitz (RBI) and Jack Erickson had doubles, and other...
