The Carrington Cardinals' 1995 state champion boys' basketball team was recognized as a 25th anniversary honoree at the State Class B Boys' Basketball Tournament in Minot, held March 17-19 at the MSU Dome. The team was originally scheduled to be honored at the 2020 tournament, but that event was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Carrington concluded a 26-1 season on the hardwood that year with three straight wins at the State B Tournament, also held in Minot. They defeated Oakes in the...

CHS was led in scoring by senior center Sydnie Grager. She was the only player to average double figures in points with 10.7 per game. Other top offensive players for the Cards included junior forward Haley...

  • Round 3 for region crown goes to FW-M

    Lane Moellenkamp|Mar 21, 2022

Harvey-Wells County made a nice run, winning 16 of their final 19 games, but those three losses came at the hands of the top ranked and undefeated Four Winds-Minnewaukan Indians. The Hornets won two of three in District 7 competition before falling to the Indians in the district final, and they defeated St. John and North Star in the Region 4 Tourney before falling at the hands of the Indians, once more culminating in a very respectable regional runner-up trophy. HWC 56, North Star 49...

  • Cards falter late, upset bid foiled

    Erik Gjovik|Mar 14, 2022

They may not have been your father's dominant Linton-HMB Lions of old, but when the postseason comes around, the switch instantly flickers to life for the traditional south-central state power. Like the soon-to-depart "Coach K" at Duke, longtime Coach Dan Carr has built a 40-plus year cachet of excellence with three state championships, and 12 regional crowns. This year's young Lion team took Carrington's best shot for the better part of three quarters, and made the plays, defensive stops and...

  • With heavy hearts, G-M falls to Mustangs, 51-50

    Erik Gjovik|Mar 14, 2022

The Griggs/Midkota Titans drew upon the fighting spirits and memory of two people in the hearts and minds of the co-op's greater community, the late Mandy Hoyt and Jacob Johnson (see related article,) but that emotion wasn't nearly enough to carry them to a Region 3 victory last Monday night in Jamestown. The South Border Mustangs continued their season by the skin of their teeth, edging the Titans by the slimmest of cruel margins, 51-50, to end the G-M season with a final record of 8-15. Game...

  • Wagner's 41 sends M-P-B home

    Erik Gjovik|Mar 14, 2022

Some basketball players are merely content to take what the opposing defense gives them. Scott Wagner took whatever he wanted. The 6'7" Ellendale center, returning All-Stater and District 5 Senior Athlete of the Year was unstoppable down low, missing only two of his 21 shot attempts and rolling to a 41-point night to eliminate the M-P-B Thunder, 75-52, in the quarterfinal round of the Region 3 Boys' Basketball Tournament in Jamestown Monday, March 7. In fact, Wagner's 19 field goals were three...

  • 4th quarter surge allows HWC to survive, advance

    Lane Moellenkamp|Mar 14, 2022

Whether it was the tough defense played by both teams or some untimely turnovers by each, the HWC Hornets escaped the grip, scoring 18 in the final quarter to defeat St. John, 45-37, in one of four opening round games at the Region 4 Boys Basketball Tournament held at the Devils Lake Sports Center on Monday, March 7. In a game that featured eight lead changes and four ties, the first quarter was just that. A three from Zavier Parisien early put the Woodchucks up three. Trailing 9-8, Alex...

  • Nelson to 2nd Team Mon-Dak; also on Region XIII squad

    Erik Gjovik|Mar 14, 2022

Bismarck State College sophomore Seth Nelson was selected to the Second Team Mon-Dak All-Conference Men's Basketball Team following a 14-16 season for the Mystics. Seth, the son of Mo and Jacqui Nelson of Carrington, was BSC's leading scorer and rebounder this past year with 13.3 points per contest and an even seven-rebound average in 2021-22. The 6'5" forward started all 30 games for the Mystics, averaging 26.6 minutes on the floor, and had shooting percentages of 45.0 from two-point range,...

  • Lions finish Cards in first round

    Erik Gjovik|Mar 7, 2022

For the first 16 minutes in their Region 3 Tournament opener, the Carrington girls' basketball team followed their previous year's script against Linton-HMB to the letter. Keep the game close, hit a few early big shots, scrap for every possession, and get a little bit of luck along the way. But the Lady Lions weren't about to repeat their heartbreak from the previous February's regional championship, and buried the Cards with a 19-5 third quarter and ended their season at 12-10 overall with a...

  • Thomas' trey knocks off Oakes; M-P-B finishes 4th

    Erik Gjovik|Mar 7, 2022

As game-winning heroics go, it wasn’t the prettiest shot ever. Still, M-P-B sophomore Allison Thomas got the proverbial “shooter’s roll” on her three-pointer from the left wing, and the Thunder survived another day. Thomas’s shot hit the rim once, twice, and finally dropped down in the waning seconds to give her team a heart-stopping 46-45 victory over the Oakes Tornadoes in the first round of play at the Region 3 Tournament in Jamestown Thursday night, February 24. Unfortunately for the Thund...

  • Cards qualify for Region 3

    Erik Gjovik|Mar 7, 2022

Just how they planned it, no doubt about it. The Carrington Cardinals have had the uncanny knack for making life difficult for themselves at times, but more often than not in 2022, they’ve made do with their circumstances. The heartache of their three-point first round loss to Griggs/Midkota from Saturday afternoon, February 26, fresh in their minds, the third-seeded Cards went to work, eliminating Barnes County North, 65-41, in loser-out play last Monday at the District 5 Tournament in J...

  • A Titanic blast: G-M in field

    Erik Gjovik|Mar 7, 2022

If there ever was a team to get hot at the right time, the sixth-seeded Griggs/Midkota Titans might not have been high on the list of prospective Cinderellas at the District 5 Tournament in Jamestown. To start the year, G-M lost their first six games out of the gate, and it would take some work to ensure that the 2021-22 campaign wouldn't spiral out of their control. But at the conclusion of their Tuesday Region 3 qualifier against the Oakes Tornadoes, it was indeed rookie Head Coach Kyle...

  • HWC takes 2nd to top-rated FW-M

    Lane Moellenkamp|Mar 7, 2022

Harvey-Wells County put up a valiant effort for 24 minutes, but couldn’t keep pace with the top-ranked team in North Dakota, falling in the championship game of the District 7 Tournament to Four Winds-Minnewaukan, 69-43. HWC had a nice tournament with a dominating win over Benson County and a hard fought victory over Warwick in the semifinals before bowing out to the Indians in the final. Following the tournament, Tate Grossman was named to the District 7 All-Tournament team, and Grossman, a...

  • Thunder falter in semi round, but qualify as Dist. 6 #3 seed

    Erik Gjovik|Mar 7, 2022

Medina/Pingree-Buchanan fell victim to the first round bye curse in their District 6 Tournament semifinal matchup against the fourth-seeded South Border Mustangs. The Thunder came out flat in a 52-35 defeat at Napoleon High School Monday night, February 28, which put M-P-B on the opposite side of the scoreboard for the first time this season against league foes. Limping out of the gate with a mere four-spot in the first quarter didn’t help matters for Coach Bob Young’s team, as the Mustangs too...

  • Topp scores 1,000th point

    Mar 7, 2022

Logan Topp became the latest member of the 1,000-point scorer’s club for the Griggs/Midkota Titans during the final regular season games of this past season. Logan, the son of Ryan and Prairie Topp of Grace City, was presented with an autographed game ball from his Titan teammates by Asst. Coach Ryan Spitzer, Head Coach Kyle Mehus and Asst. Coach Dakota Hoyt. (Courtesy photo)...

  • Lura joins exclusive club

    Erik Gjovik|Mar 7, 2022

Carrington senior Brecken Lura won his second consecutive state title as one of the highlights of a 240-win career at the school Friday night, February 18, at the Fargodome, during the North Dakota State Wrestling Tournament. He also earned the right to claim a distinction that only 11 other wrestlers statewide have achieved. Brecken, the son of Travis and Mindy Lura of Carrington, became the first in CHS history to place in the top eight at the state individual tournament in the maximum six...

  • Jensen named to ND Wrestling HOF Class of '23

    Mar 7, 2022

Former Carrington High School wrestling standout, and current CHS assistant coach and junior high coach, Justin Jensen, was named as an upcoming honoree for the North Dakota Wrestling Hall of Fame in 2023. Jensen was a two-time state champion for the Cardinals in 1994 and 1995, at the 130 and 145-pound weight classes. He was a four-time state placer at CHS from 1992-95, and was the recipient of the "Mr. Wrestler" award for Class B in 1995. He then wrestled at Valley City State University, where...
