    Erik Gjovik|Mar 7, 2022

Several Cardinal shooters had some perfect rounds at the Garrison Bullseye Tournament Saturday, February 26. The CHS boys got six out of the top 10 placers, and the girls five out of 10 at the meet. As a group, the Cardinal teams shot a score of 3,178 with 117 10’s, or bullseyes, to place second out of three teams. • Three champions at State B for Cards

    Erik Gjovik|Feb 28, 2022

They may not have had the biggest team at the State B Individual Wrestling Tournament, but the ones who showed up for Carrington made the longest-lasting impact. Three Cardinal wresters captured state championships, and one other made the finals match in their respective weight classes Thursday and Friday, February 17-18, at the Fargodome. 2022’s tournament marked the end of the legendary careers of seniors Brecken Lura and Michael Clifton with state championships, and another senior, Matthew D...

  • Cards take dual consolation

    Erik Gjovik|Feb 28, 2022

Carrington, in spite of their open weights, made it a productive Saturday afternoon at the State B Dual Wrestling Tournament. The Cards bounced back from a first-round 46-18 loss to New Salem-Almont, and took the next two matches to claim the consolation championship February 19. On the way, the Cards avenged two losses to the Central Cass Squirrels in the regular season and Region 2 Tournament, 38-33, and got a match-clinching pin to earn a tight 40-36 win over the Honkers of...

  • Gaining speed: Cards keep foot on gas in win vs. MPCG

    Erik Gjovik|Feb 28, 2022

The District 5 Tournament in Jamestown was in the sights of the Carrington Cardinals, but they had one last bit of business to tend to before playoff basketball. The Cards took a 71-54 win over the May-Port-CG Patriots at Finley-Sharon High School February 17, in which they shot an efficient 56.9 percent from the field. Lucas Hendrickson again blistered the MPCG interior defense by going 9-for-17 and hitting five of his six shots from the line for 23 points, his sixth game of more than 20...

  • Hornet cagers hitting stride

    Lane Moellenkamp|Feb 28, 2022

The HWC boys’ basketball team finished the regular season like every head coach would like - on a win streak. This particular streak for HWC moved to four games this week with double-digit road victories over Washburn and Towner-Granville-Upham. HWC 66, Washburn 56 It took nearly the full 32 minutes to put away the Washburn Cardinals, but in the end, HWC did just that with a seven-point second half advantage, and a 10-point victory in Washburn on Thursday, February 17. Washburn took the advantage in the first quarter, as Aiden Parrill hit t...

  • L/E/M ends HWC girls' season

    Lane Moellenkamp|Feb 28, 2022

The Langdon/Edmore/Munich girls basketball team wasted little time in eliminating the Harvey-Wells County Hornets in the Region 4 Girls Basketball Tournament held Monday, February 21 at the Devils Lake Sports Center. Three-point plays were in abundance in the first quarter for the Cardinals, as Jaya Henderson hit two and Jalynn Swanson connected on another. Morgan Freije tallied an old-fashioned 3-pointer and Swanson just missed a free throw to add another as L/E/M jumped out on the Hornets, 22-5, after one. HWC played much better in the...

  • Rebels nip M-P-B in overtime, 43-42

    Erik Gjovik|Feb 28, 2022

There aren’t too many examples of basketball games in which the score is tied at every quarter break in regulation. But that’s the situation that the M-P-B Thunder and Edgeley-Kulm-Montpelier Rebels found themselves in their regular season finale in Edgeley Thursday, February 17. Knotted up at 6-6, 20-20, 28-28 and 41-41, one made basket from the Rebels’ Adam Nitschke made all the difference in four minutes of overtime play, and a 43-42 setback for the Thunder. Nitschke led E-K-M with 16 point...

The Carrington Gymmastics club, coached by Tammy Sorensen, had a very impressive weekend at the Kim Lupo Memorial Meet in Minot Saturday, February 5. Local gymnasts had nine separate performances by eight individuals that scored a point total of 9.0 or higher at the meet. Paisley Lura had the highest score of 9.35 on the uneven bars, followed by Anna Monson (9.3, bars), Tessa Mittleider (9.3, vault and 9.05, floor exercise), Jazmyn Ybarra (9.3, vault), Jessa Larsen (9.2, bars), and Briley Carr...

  • Cards make Region 3 field with victory

    Erik Gjovik|Feb 21, 2022

Almost a decade-and-a-half of basketball has elapsed since Carrington had any Monday night district tournament plans that didn’t involve the 7:30 p.m. prime time slot. But there was one more streak on the line for the Cardinals in the District 5 Tournament final night Monday, February 14, and that was extending their regional appearance count to 20 consecutive years. Mission accomplished on that front. CHS left no doubt of their strength and resolve, hitting on all cylinders in a 68-22 win o...

  • Stuffed: Struggles for Titans in first round 59-15 loss to LaMoure/L-M

    Erik Gjovik|Feb 21, 2022

Seeding and records can go out the window when the postseason light switch flips on for the La-Moure/Litchville-Marion Loboes. The pack came back with a vengeance from their fourth seed slot, showing that there is quite a gulf between the top and bottom halves of District 5 in competition level. A 59-15 runaway victory for the eventual district champion Loboes over the fifth-seeded G-M Titans at the Jamestown Civic Center Friday, February 11, put the rest of the field on notice. Just getting...

    Erik Gjovik|Feb 21, 2022

Carrington got eight of their 12 wrestlers qualified for the following week's State B Individual Tournament in Fargo with a solid showing at the Region 2 meet in Walhalla Saturday, February 12. With a score of 183 points, the Cards finished in third in the team standings behind host and meet champion Pembina Co. North and Central Cass, who won the Region 2 Dual tourney the weekend prior. Five champions were crowned for CHS at the northeast grappling outpost near the Canadian border, while two...

  • Thunder qualify for region as #3 seed

    Erik Gjovik|Feb 21, 2022

The M-P-B Thunder girls left the court at the District 6 Tournament in Ashley in the same position from which they started, as the third seed from the league. Last Monday, the Thunder put together a good effort for three quarters to outlast South Border, 54-47, in the Region 3 qualifying round. Both teams had their perimeter games working, as the Thunder and Mustangs connected on seven three-pointers for each side. In particular, M-P-B’s Allison Thomas was feeling it. After a scoreless s...

  • Cards upset E-K-M, nudge Tornadoes

    Erik Gjovik|Feb 21, 2022

Whatever high-octane fuel Lucas Hendrickson has in his tank, the Carrington Cardinals have used to go for a fun ride through the latter third of their District 5 schedule. The Cards rode nights of 24 and 27 points each from their senior leader to take two crucial games, 50-49 against Oakes in the East Gym on Tuesday, February 8, and a mild 59-48 upset over E-K-M in Edgeley two nights after that. That series of contests has vaulted CHS (8-8, 3-3 District 5) up into the third seed for the...

  • HWC Hornets coast past Titans by 25

    Lane Moellenkamp|Feb 21, 2022

Harvey-Wells County started strong and kept the momentum throughout the game, defeating Griggs-Midkota by 25 points in Glenfield on Thursday, February 10. Five Hornets found the scoring column in the first quarter, and four of them scored at least four points as the Hornets opened the game up scoring 20 points in the first and holding the Griggs-Midkota offense to just a three pointer and four free- throws in the first eight minutes. The scoring evened out in the second as Jaxon Gronneberg scored eight for the Titans, while Gabe Allmaras and...

Now, the Thunder sit at 14 victories and counting after running the table in league play, following wins of 68-54 over Napoleon/Gackle-Streeter on February 8 and 65-31 at the expense of Strasburg-Zeeland last Tuesday. The dual threat of guard Josh Moser and forward Rylen Wick teamed up for 43 points in the win over the Imperials, and Gage Magstadt played a key role with 11 of his ow...

  • Roney's 31 for Oakes sends Cards to qualifier

    Erik Gjovik|Feb 21, 2022

A pretty remarkable string of consistency came to an end Saturday night, February 12, for the Carrington Cardinal girls' basketball program. For every season since 2009, a span of 13 years, the Cards have advanced to the district championship game, whether it was in District 7 or following their move to District 5 beginning in 2014. The Oakes Tornadoes, behind 31 points from junior Laikyn Roney, put CHS in the unfamiliar territory of having to qualify for Region 3 through the back door channels...
