Hornets' run sinks Raiders

A 19-0 run by Harvey-Wells County in the third and fourth quarters propelled the Hornets to their first District 7 win of the season, as they defeated the Lakota Raiders, 55-42, Monday, January 17, in Lakota.

Both the Hornets and Raiders played a close first quarter with HWC’s largest lead at 9-5, but that lead was only one at the end of eight minutes. The second quarter saw Lakota take an 18-15 lead, but HWC finished the half up on a 9-2 run courtesy of a three-pointer by Madden Thorson and deuces from Isaac Friese, Gabe Allmaras and Alex Erickson.

Zach Gibson scored four quick points for the Raiders to start the second half, and another Raider bucket by Ross Thompson closed the Hornet lead to 30-28. The Hornets would end the third quarter on a 12-0 run in the final 2:20, and was highlighted by two treys from Tate Grossman as HWC pulled away, 42-28.

HWC would continue the dominance, scoring the first seven points of the fourth quarter aided by two steals and layups by Keller and one steal and layup from Madden Thorson, moving the advantage to 49-28.

The Raiders finished the game with a 14-6 run, with Gibson scoring six and Jaxon Baumgarn adding five more late in the game to make the final score 55-42.

Leading the Hornet charge for the night was Grossman with 19 points, which included 12 points in the third quarter. Keller, behind six points in the fourth quarter, was also in double digits with 10.

The Raiders were led by Gibson with 13 and Thompson with 12.

With the win, the Hornets improve to 6-2 on the season, while the Raiders drop to 3-5 overall.
