Collegiate Congrats: Big man on campus

Since hitting his growth spurt in high school, Seth Nelson has always stood a head above most of his peers.

The 6’5” graduate of the CHS Class of 2020 and First Team All-State selection in his senior season took his tall, athletic frame and basketball acumen to Bismarck State College, where he has played a outsized role on the court for the Mystics men’s basketball team.

In the first 17 games of action this season, Nelson has averaged 13.4 points per game, an even seven rebounds, 2.4 assists and has racked up a 79.4% free-throw percentage.

Through it all, he has kept his nose to the grindstone while working through BSC’s Agronomy program.

“School for me has been relatively easy-going, as the teachers work really well with me being a student-athlete,” Nelson says. “They understand that I’m going to miss class, and help me stay on top of things by not leaving me on my own.”

He says that his experience at BSC so far has been a very positive one.

“My class experience has been great, and the small class size helps a lot with making really close friends and having a close relationship with your professors,” said Nelson.

Field trips have been a highlight of his schooling thus far, he says.

“They’ve been some of the more interesting things I’ve gotten to do here,” he said. “Going through agronomy, it’s allowed me to see many different aspects of the job, and also the trips have let me learn hands-on skills.”

With many nights played in gyms throughout the National Junior College Athletic Association’s (NJCAA) Mon-Dak Conference, along with the physical toll college basketball takes on the body, Nelson says sometimes it can be a bit much on the sleep schedule.

“At times, when we get back super late from an away game, it’s hard to wake up the next morning, but other than that, it’s been a really great experience,” he concluded.

Seth is the son of Morrie (Mo) and Jacqui Nelson of Carrington. He has two older siblings, brother, Alex, and sister, Maara.
