Could the balance of power in District 6 be primed to change for the time being, at least on the boys’ side?
Longtime conference power Linton-HMB and ND Sports Hall of Fame Coach Dan Carr have been at or near the top in league standings for over 40 years now, but the upstart M-P-B Thunder served notice that they could be a challenger to the Lions’ throne.
A 49-47 win for M-P-B in Medina Thursday, January 27, in just their first District contest this season, could end up being the confidence-builder that guides the Thunder through the remainder of their schedule.
Rylen Wick (18 points) and Josh Moser (13) were again the Thunder leaders, but it was the play of Gage Magstadt with 10 points that ultimately helped the hometown team pull out the victory over the Lions.
For Linton-HMB in the loss, sophomore Jace Jochim had a game-high 22 points, and Grant Bosch, a junior, added 12.
Similar to M-P-B, the Lions (7-5, 3-1) are a very young team, with no seniors on the roster, and the Thunder just have one.
The win for the home squad was the second half of a doubleheader which pitted the M-P-B girls against the ninth-ranked and 11-2 Lady Lions.
Linton-HMB put the rest of Region 3 on notice that they could be the consensus team to beat, sending the Thunder to a 60-38 loss.
Senior guard JayCee Richter splashed in 29 points in the Lions’ scorebook, while Teegan Scherr also had a nice showing with 10 points for Linton-HMB, now done with their District 6 schedule at 5-0.
The lone Thunder player in double figures was senior Ryleigh Martin, scoring 10 points.

The Thunder boys’ team pulled off their second consecutive thriller against intra-Region 3 opponent Oakes Saturday, January 29, taking a 51-49 triumph after pulling within 36-35 with just one period to play.
Wick was the star performer in the win with 33 points, and Moser contributed nine more. Trey Skoglund paced the Tornadoes (4-7) with 16 points.
Earlier that night, M-P-B’s girls took advantage of new life and four extra minutes on the clock to snare a 47-42 overtime win over the current number two seed out of District 5.
Martin’s 18 points loomed large in the Thunder’s collective effort, and sophomore guard Allison Thomas also had a nice game from the field with 13 points.
Oakes, who fell to 10-7, had balance at the top of their lineup with 11 points by Abby Cox and 10 each from both Laikyn Roney and Lily Thorpe.
M-P-B’s girls, 11-5 and 3-2 in league play following their 60-15 win over Strasburg-Zeeland this past Tuesday, will enter the district tournament on Thursday in Ashley as the number three seed, and will take on the sixth-seeded Clippers once again in the first round.
The Thunder boys now sit at 1-0 in District 6, and 9-3 overall. This Tuesday, they face the N-G-S Imperials in Napoleon for a district matchup, and keep the bus running Thursday to face LaMoure/L-M in a nonconference affair.
