Second half run vs. Cards vaults #7 E-K-M girls to win

Edgeley-Kulm-Montpelier was living the high life for quite awhile in Class B girls' basketball.

Winners of their first 14 games and soaring all the way to #7 in the statewide polls, the Rebels would end up being humbled by another Region 3 title contender, Linton-HMB, by a 57-32 margin.

And for a time in the first half in their January 28 game in Kulm, it looked like Carrington could make enough plays to defeat them once more.

E-K-M steered their season back on track with a 34-21 second half advantage after trailing by two at the break, and defeated the Cards, 54-43.

The Rebels would later clinch the top District 5 seed and a first-round bye in the tournament with an eye-popping 101-9 thrashing over Barnes Co. North. A planned game last Tuesday with Griggs/Midkota for the Rebs was postponed to February 3.

"Our effort was solid," said CHS Coach Andy Braaten, "but foul trouble helped E-K-M cash in at the line, and turnovers at crucial times led to a few easy layups and points."

Sydnie Grager mostly had her way inside for Carrington, as the senior post finished with 18 points and eight rebounds. She also had two assists in the loss.

Coming into the half, two threes by reserve guard Kacie Rexin gave the Cards a 22-20 lead against the top team in District 5.

E-K-M took advantage of 19 CHS fouls, and went 14-of-20 from the free-throw line.

Kiara Jangula led the Rebs with 15 points, and twin 12-point nights were submitted by Norah Entzi and Mataeya Mathern.

Freshman Isabel Wendel had six assists and four steals for the Cards, both team-highs.

Carrington (8-6 overall, 3-2 in District 5) finishes up their regular season today (February 7) in Rugby, in a makeup game from earlier in January.

This Friday, District 5 Tournament play begins at the Jamestown Civic Center. CHS will be the third seed, and faces off with sixth-seeded Ellendale (4-12) in the third game of the night at 7:30 p.m.

Other first round games pit #4 LaMoure/Litchville-Marion (11-5) versus #5 Griggs/Midkota (5-9) at 4:30, and #2 Oakes (10-7) against #7 BCN (0-13) at 6:00.
