Books & Bits: Will wonders never cease at the library?

“A child who reads will be an adult who thinks.” The primary mission of Carrington City Library is to inspire a love of reading. The library is excited to share with you its newest collection, one designed to excite children about reading and strengthen reading comprehension skills: Wonderbooks!

According to Becoming a Nation of Readers: The Report of the Commission on Reading, “The single most important activity for building the knowledge required for eventual success in reading is reading aloud to children.”

The more children read and are read to, the more successful they will be. This is common sense, as practice makes perfect, and reading is a skill that practice can perfect. This key component of raising a reader is part of why we offer storytime each Wednesday and Summer Reading programs.

Now, we have added a collection of Wonderbooks - print books and audio books all-in-one! – to help our pre-readers get even more reading time.

Children press play to read along with a picture book, turning pages when they hear a chime. Because they require minimal adult assistance, Wonderbooks empower children to become independent readers. It’s so grown up to turn the pages by themselves at the right time! fter reading and rereading their books, children can switch to learning mode for discussion questions, which are excellent dialogue starters.

Through a grant from the North Dakota State Library, Carrington City Library has started our Wonderbook collection with 28 titles and more are on the way! From dinosaurs to unicorns, Fancy Nancy to Charlie the Ranch dog, we surely have a Wonderbook that will delight your young readers.

Visit the library (Monday - Thursday from 10:30-5:30 or Saturday from 10:30-1:30) to explore this next collection.
