From the Past: Munson nominated for Governor's Award

March 13, 1947

Members of various Lutheran congregations of central North Dakota gathered to pay their last respects to an early-day pastor, the Rev. Ole J. Hungness, who died in his home last Saturday in Sheyenne.

Foster County had several exhibitors and consignors at the Valley City Winter Show last week and contributed at least two officers to livestock organizations represented there. Consignors and exhibitors included J.D. Hooten, Skadberg and sons, Henry W. Lies, Gustav Miller and Larson and Sons.

An audience that packed the auditorium at Hebron school saw the Longview community players in their production of "Little Red Schoolhouse" and stayed following the performance for refreshments served and furnished by ladies of the community.

American Legion Auxiliary met Wednesday evening at the home of Mrs. H.C. Duntley with Mesdames Judson Tracy, Margit Getty and Henry Getty as assistant hostesses. Piano selections were played by Barbara Craven and Fred Pepple sang. A talk was given on girl scouting by Mrs. C.H. Hunstad, and a short review of the "History of the American Legion and Auxiliary" was given by Mrs. Perry Goss.

Carrington High School's junior representatives at the New Rockford basketball tournament on Monday and Tuesday evening carried off first place honors by defeating the Fessenden junior team in the finals 30-21. Sheyenne took third place defeating New Rockford 15-9.

Miss Teresa Mae Richter, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Theo J. Richter of Sykeston, became the bride of William Henri Therlault, son of Mr and Mrs. R. M. Therlault of Oakville, Washington on February 15th at Our Lady of the Rosary church, Clearwater, with Rev. Henry McHenry officiating.

March 9, 1972

A Glenfield resident, Mrs. Edwin (Gladys) Munson, has been nominated by Carrington VFW and American Legion posts for the Governor's Award as North Dakota's outstanding handicapped citizen. Mrs. Munson is the victim of multiple sclerosis and confined to a wheelchair. She was for many years a registered nurse at the Carrington hospital.

Gov. William L. Guy has announced appointment of an area youth to serve on the Governor's Committee on Children and Youth as a representative of his local youth council. Steven Looysen, son of Mr. and Mrs. Wayne Looysen, Carrington, will represent the Carrington Youth Council. He is a sophomore at Carrington High School.

Elections were held Feb. 16 for posts on the parish council of Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Elected officers were: James Vetsch, president, Virgil Zink, vice president, and Bernice Unruh, secretary.

The basketball season came to an end Thursday for all District 13 teams except New Rockford. The Rockets won the tournament, played in their home gym, by defeating the Binford Eagles 85-73.

Ten Sykeston basketball players got a different look at the game Saturday as they took the floor in wheelchairs. They were competing against the team from the Crippled Children's School in Jamestown, and to make things more fair, they were playing by the visitors' rules.

Elizabeth Kucera and Duane Lura were married Feb. 26 at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, Crookston. Parents are Mr. and Mrs. Leonard Kucera of Crookston and Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Lura, Carrington.

Mr. and Mrs. Carlton Larson, Sykeston, were honored by a group of friends at the Larson home Feb. 28 in a surprise observance of their 25th wedding anniversary.

Foster County Commissioners are looking at purchasing used cruisers from the North Dakota Highway Patrol for use by the sheriff's department.

Currently Sheriff John Statema and Deputy Randy Saint personally own the vehicles they use in the line of duty and are reimbursed for mileage at 30 cents a mile.

The Woodworth Volunteer Fire Department is raffling a 1956 International pumper fire truck as a fund-raiser for the department.

Miss North Dakota Stephanie Hamilton was in Carrington this week to speak to the senior class at Carrington High School. She spoke to the senior girls about the benefits of entering the Miss Carrington contest.

New Arrivals - daughter to Jim and Hope Wolff, New Rockford, on Feb. 27th - daughter to Jerry and Penny Schuster, New Rockford on March 5th.

Business of the Week - Uptown Service by Wallace & Andrea Scheen. We are a small town garage. We do oil changes, shocks, struts, brakes, minor work like tune-ups, starters, alternators, power steering pumps, plugs and wires. One of the changes occurring in the business now is we are doing a little more mechanic work. A tip on succeeding in business is to be honest and do your best. A "perfect day" at work is when the schedule is full and everything goes right.

Carrington eighth grader Katie Schaffer earned first place in Foster County's junior high Mathcounts competition last week.

"Fools Rush In" - starring Matthew Perry and Salma Hayek is playing at the Youth Center this week.

Carrington's Winterfest '97 festivities are kicking off on Thursday, March 13 with a Kiwanis Pancake Day. Friday is highlighted with a Youth Dance at the Youth Center. Saturday it's all about store clearances. There will be a pie eating contest, a beer and wine judging contest and the Easter Bunny will make his appearance. Central City Jammers will be playing followed by Mardi Gras Festivities and a dance. Sunday hosts the Carrington Sport Show and Women's Ag Day. There will also be a community concert at the Carrington High School by Jon Chandler.
