The Harvey-Wells County track and field teams continue to perform at a high level, as they competed on April 1 at Minot State in the CNDC Indoor Meet and on April 4 at the Grand Forks Invite at the Fritz Pollard Athletic Complex.
The HWC boys claimed the meet title in the CNDC meet, scoring 121 points, and the Grand Forks Invite, scoring 146 points, while the girls finished 12th with 24 points at the CNDC and fourth with 77 points in Grand Forks.
CNDC Meet
On the boys side, the Hornets picked up five event wins. Madden Thorson brought home first place honors in the 55-meter hurdles and the 400 dash, while Alex Erickson won the long jump and Garin Opdahl won the triple jump. The 4x160 relay team of Isaac Friese, Tallen Thorson, Kayl Sieg and Madden Thorson set a meet record and earned first place also.
Picking up runner-up finishes for HWC were Madden Thorson in the 55 dash, Harrison Lies in the 400 dash, Tate Grossman in the 55 hurdles and Erickson in the high jump and the triple jump.
The Hornet girls were led by Christalea Wagner, who placed in two individual events. Wagner was runner up in the 400 dash and was also eighth in the 55 dash. The Hornet girls also picked up two top five results in the 4x1 and 4x400 relays.
Grand Forks Invite
Opdahl picked up 34 team points, winning the pole vault and triple jump and placing second in the shot put and third in the long jump as the Hornets picked up their second meet title in four days.
Friese was also an individual double winner, claiming the 60 and 200 dashes while Erickson picked up a win in the long jump and second place efforts in the high jump and triple jump. Other first place finishes for the HWC boys were Madden Thorson in the 60 hurdles, and the 4x200 relay of Friese, Tallen Thorson, Sieg and Madden Thorson.
For the Hornet girls, who saw their best finish of the year, Wagner and Breanna Heilman each picked up two second place finishes. Wagner's efforts were in the 60 and 200 dashes, while Heilman's finishes were in the long jump and high jump.
Kamryn Sanders picked up three individual places with fourth place efforts in the 200 dash and high jump and a fifth place finish in the 400 dash. The 4x200 relay team of Heilman, Larissa Arnold, Emma Dockter and Sanders raced to a second place finish.
