From the Past: Fire destroys Edmunds Memorial Building

75 Years Ago

May 1, 1947

Henry Getty was installed as commander of the Carrington Veterans of Foreign Wars post in a special meeting held in the armory last week. Other elected officers installed were Robert J. O’Neill, senior vice commander; LeRoy Tollefson, junior vice commander; Henry Smith, quartermaster, Alvin Paulson, trustee; Harold Bohnet, post surgeon; Stanley Skadberg, advocate; James O’Neill, chaplain. Appointive officers announced by Getty and James Bronaugh, adjutant; Walter Caverly, service officer, and Walter Engstrom, sgt. major.

Winners in the American Legion Auxiliary sponsored Poppy poster contest were announced Tuesday evening at the school declamation program by Mrs. J.L. Romine, who also presented awards.

In Class 1, comprising the fourth, fifth and sixth grades, first prize went to Barbara Craven, second to Evelyn Berglund and third to Karen Skjonsby. In Class 2, grades seven, eight and nine, the first place winner was Margaret Mary Hunstad, second Maxine Helm and third Robert Jeske.

McHenry High School placed first in the Foster County one-act play contest held at Bordulac last Friday, when five schools competed.

The McHenry Aggies is the name of a new 4-H club organized a few weeks ago in the county, Melvin Midgley is president, Jerome Ronholm, vice-president, and Cyrus Harding secretary-treasurer of this new club of 15 members at McHenry. Richard Lowe and Paul Frappier are leaders.

The Foster County Chapter of the Wildlife Federation has declared war on crows. At the regular meeting of the chapter last Thursday evening, it was decided that a concerted crow hunt be organized throughout the country, and ten captains were chosen to head teams in competition, Martin Hjelseth and C.W. Yoder were named supervisors of the campaign.

Three hours after they were hatched, turkey poults from Watertown, S.D. were unloaded at the Carrington airport into the car of a local farmer shortly after noon the same day. The Watertown hatchery, where the poults originated, has inaugurated a high speed system of delivering its turkey poults. An airplane is used to transport them to their destination. On their trip Tuesday, Carrington was the fifth stop for the plane. Ray Kadoun, airport attendant, said that the hatchery had delivered 10,000 turkey poults by plane this season.

50 Years Ago

April 27, 1972

Rain and chilly weather dampened enthusiasm for the scheduled horse show at the Carrington Sales Ring Friday afternoon but the evening sale brought out more people than could crowd into the building. It’s the time of year where people start thinking of horse trading. Mr. and Mrs. Dan Genre, owners of the sales ring, explained. They estimated that three times the number that regularly attend the cattle sales were on hand to buy and sell Friday.

Supt. A.K. Johnson has announced the hiring of two new coaches for the 1972-73 Carrington High School athletic season. The new head basketball coach will be Ron Waggoner, who is currently teaching in New Leipzig. He has coached there three years following his 1969 graduation from NDSU. David Ouradnik has been chosen as the new head football coach. He will be a spring graduate of Mayville State College. His teaching assignment will be social studies and physical education.

CHS trackmen took third place in a six team meet held in Valley City April 28. They piled up 45 points, trailing Valley City 80 and West Fargo 70.

Doug Kelly again placed his teammates as he placed in four events. He gained a first in the low hurdles, second in high hurdles, fifth in long jump and fourth in the pole vault.

Tom Smith was the only other Carrington thin clad to win an event as he took first in the high jump. He also came in second in the 440.

The girls’ high school track opened their season with a win at the expense of the Pingree girls. The score for dual meet held Apr. 4 was 93-50.

Kathy Zink, Bordulac was among 50 students who appeared in the annual Mary College spring choral concert Apr. 23. Miss Zink, a sophomore in nursing, is a member of the Mary Singers and Mary Notes.

April 28, 1997

It’s estimated that 10 percent of North Dakota’s population has been displaced or otherwise affected as flood waters from the Red River made ghost towns of the communities along its banks. On April 22nd a community meeting at Carrington High School was called to help civic, church and community organizations coordinate relief efforts. The city armory has been transformed into a local flood relief information and drop-off center.

The residents of Edmunds Township were in favor of rebuilding Edmunds Memorial Building after an early morning explosion and fire destroyed the building. It is believed that it was a result of a leak in the buildings propane furnace.

R.A.G.S. a new reclamation grocery and dry goods store is set to open on Carrington’s Main Street May 1st. R.A.G.S. will carry non-perishable grocery goods like canned fruits and vegetables, boxed goods and personal care items.

Carrington Youth Center Theatre playing this weekend, “The Empire Strikes Back.”

Carrington High School qualified for state in three events. Brian Lura placed second in the long jump, the 1600 meter relay team also qualified for state by winning their race, members included Brian Lura, Tyson Kramer, Dan Keys and Jeremy Friezen. Tara Copenhaver also qualified for state in the shot put.
