From the Past: DPRCA presents 'Moon Over Buffalo'

May 15, 1947

Leaders of Foster County 4-H Home Economics clubs will meet at the Carrington School May 13 for a training meeting in project work carried on in their clubs. Miss Julie E. Brekke, extension agent in clothing will conduct the meeting. Names of 4-H Home Economics clubs and leaders are : Glenfield Gals, Mrs. Harland Erickson and Mrs. LeRoy Johnson; Grace City Livewires, Mrs. Jacob Haas; Juanita Clever Cooks, Mrs. Hans Anderson and Mrs. Gordon Pedersen; Bordulac Busy Bees, Mrs. Lawrence Zink and Mrs. Oscar Zink; McHenry Busy Brownies, Mrs. Arthur Midgley and Mrs. George Paterson; Estabrook Merry Makers, Mrs. Ervin Rapp and Mrs. Sidney Indergaard.

Bernard Short became a hospital patient last Wednesday when he fractured some ribs in an automobile accident which occurred on Highway No. 7 east of Carrington. The car, belonging to Leo Krenz and driven by Lowell Short was damaged somewhat. Lowell Short and Krenz, who was also in the car, escaped without injury.

E.D. Seekins, former Independent publisher, recently made the purchase of a theatre at North Long Beach, Calif., friends here have been informed. The Seekins family now resides in Anaheim, where Seekins and his brother-in-law, Charles Holiday, operate a drug store.

Harold Dufelmeier, Geo. Smutzler and R.F. Marcussen are the official delegates from Carrington who will go to Williston Sunday for the annual state convention of the Junior Chamber of Commerce of the state. Some other members may also attend.

Steve L. Reimers of Carrington has been promoted to the grade of cadet private first class in Company “C”, 1st Battalion, Corps of Cadets, Reserve Officer’s Training Corps at the North Dakota Agricultural College, Fargo. Mr. Reimers was advanced to the grade of private first class after prescribed for this promotion.

50 Years Ago

May 11, 1972

Ernest Steinman was elected commander of McCreary-Bonderud Post, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Carrington at the election meeting April 25. Other newly elected officers are Aldon Georgeson, senior vice commander; Larry Darby, junior vice commander; Elmer Retzlaff, quartermaster (re-elected); Lloyd Ingebretson, chaplain.

Steve Wenass, owner of Steve’s Jack & Jill in Carrington, was elected a director of the state food retailers’ association at the annual convention held at Bismarck.

Ann Kanwischer, Bordulac was judged the winner in the annual essay-quiz contest sponsored by Dakota Central Rural Telephone Co-op this year. The second place winner was Sheryl Helm, Cathay, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Marvin Helm of rural Cathay, Miss Helm will join other runners-up attending a Youth Conference at the State Capitol, and a bus tour of the N.D. Badlands and other points of interest in western North Dakota.

The Vet’s Club team has won the city championship in the Women’s bowling tournament held April 18-26. The winning score was 2844.The team members were Deloris Gates, Pat Baldwin, Alice Bergan, Joanne Garland and Hazel Harrington. Elsie Berglund and Marie Kallberg rolled the winning score in the doubles event - 1,199, Mrs. Kallberg also tallied the high individual score recorded for all events - 1,775.

Scott Sturlaugson and Roger Laber have been elected vice president and secretary of the Student Senate at Valley City State College.

Two Foster County students were among the 368 who received degrees from Concordia College in the spring commencement ceremony on April.30.

Donald Haven of McHenry was awarded a B.A. degree, Dwight Penas of Carrington received a B.A., summa cum laude.

May 12, 1997

Dr. Robert Voglewede and Plains Dental Care have moved to a new location. Following the completion of remodeling inside and out of the former Hardware Hank store on Main, they will be celebrating an open house on May 15th.

Many of the county roads are closed due to high water. Entering and leaving Grace City is getting tough with road closures. Munson Bridge north and east of ND 200 and the Fireside road west of Grace City are also closed, leaving few if any roads open out of town.

Dakota Prairie Regional Center for the Arts announce it’s sixth annual summer stock theatre production, Moon Over Buffalo. For the second year in a row, DPRCA is the first theatre in the country outside of New York City, to receive the rights to produce a hit Broadway show.

Janell Harrington of the Prairie Inn is the Chamber of Commerce’s employee of the month for April.

Students of the month for Carrington High School for the month of April are Justin Dunn, Jeff Wede, Ann Johnson, Lynn Swanson and Kristin Clark.

Business of the Week: Budget Beverages and Advertising by Ray and Gayle Kuss. Our business sells coffee flavored coffees, chocolate and also do vending of snacks, pop, cappuccino, plus we sell advertising specialty items. The changes in our business is the constant updates of equipment. A tip for succeeding in our business is a lot of hard work and being sensitive to the needs of others. A “perfect day” at work is a whole day without a service call or coin jam, and when customers are happy and playful.

Carrington Elementary School’s sixth graders are learning how to appreciate and protect the water they use thanks to an on-line interactive class offered through the National Geographic Society and funded by Cargill.

The Carrington Health Center Ambulance took time to honor employers who offer time off to employees to serve on the ambulance staff. The awards were presented to Mike Parr, representing CHC, Carl Robinson of Reimers Seed Farm, Wally Purcell, representing Calvary Baptist Church, Della Wolff, representing Seaburg Drug, Ron Wenaas of SuperValu and Randy Leadbetter of Randy’s Electric.

Midkota musicians earn 2 star ratings at state festival. Cody Hoyt, trap-set soloist and a clarinet trio consisting of Liz Topp, Mandy Bartlett and Amy Hoffman.
