From the Past: Carrington Jaycees win honors

75 Years Ago

May 22, 1947

The sixtieth anniversary of the marriage of Mr. and Mrs. Adolph Kutz was observed Sunday morning, May 11, at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Sykeston with the church filled to capacity.

Grade children who received honors for spelling improvement through the T.H.Cousins memorial fund were announced at the parent-teachers meeting Wednesday evening. The awards were made by Mrs. T. H. Cousins Sr., winners were: Grade 1. Sandra Footitt and Jerry Miller; 2. Marlin Stokes and Linda Duursma; 3. Gerald Paulson and Adrienne Torscher; 4. Janice Kirchoff and Neola Meyers; 4. Evelyn Zink and Duane Alfstad; 6. Harold Kivley and Mary Ann Winterer; 7. Jerome Barnhart and Delores Herman; 8. Donna Klein and Delores Kruger.

Walter F. Caverly, Foster County veterans service officer, is now located in his new office in room 304 of the county courthouse. He is occupying the space formerly used by the feed and seed loan office. He formerly had an office below the Metzoff building.

World War II veterans and alumni of pre-war Boys States will take prominent roles in the North Dakota Legion sponsored Boys State scheduled at NDAC, June 22 to 29, LeRoy Pease, director, said as he scanned the staff roles.

Carrington will be represented by three youths at Boys State it was announced by Jim Felchle, member of the Carrington American Legion post’s committee. They are Pat Carr, sponsored by the Legion; Art Lies, sponsored by the Junior Chamber of Commerce, and Sammy Zimmerman, sponsored by the Kiwanis Club.

Attending the sessions of the Future Homemakers of America in convention at NDAC, Fargo last week were Miss Madelyn Johnson, local home economics instructor, and the following students; Avis Jean Froelich, June Galt, Maxine Dickerson, Ellen Pierson, Verna Parks, Mary Ann Hayashi and Joanne Putnam.

50 Years Ago

May 18, 1972

Roy A. Holand, LaMoure, chairman and Vernon S. Cooper, Carrington, manager of Garrison Diversion Conservancy District, testified at hearings in Washington, D.C. in the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives Subcommittees on Appropriations for public works May 16, in support of appropriations of construction funds for the Garrison Diversion Unit, Minot Extension Unit and the Extension of the Garrison Diversion Unit.

A goal was realized when Mrs. Ed Doeling, president of the Carrington Hospital and Homes Auxiliary, presented a check to cover the cost of a new heart monitor to Sister Charitas, administrator of the local hospital. The Auxiliary had campaigned throughout the winter for funds to buy the monitor. The occasion of the presentation was a tea on May 9 at Holy Family Nursing Home sponsored by the hospital. May 7-12 was National Hospital Week.

The Carrington Jaycees again won honors at the state convention last weekend in Minot. Local president Alan Butts, won one of the three outstanding president awards, with the chapter placing 24 out of 104 in the “Parade of Cities.”

Name of winners of an essay quiz contest sponsored by Tri-County Electric Cooperative of Carrington were announced by E.M. Arnston, manager. The four girl winners include Denise Steinbach and Colleen O’Connor, both of New Rockford, Darlis Lambrecht of Jamestown and Margaret Wyngarden of Pettibone. In the boys division, the winners include Gregory DeVillers of Kensal, Hal Fischer of Pettibone, Reuben Weigelt of Fessenden and James Nayes of Jamestown.

May 19, 1997

Forty-seven seniors will take part in commencement exercises Sunday, May 25 at the Carrington High School the Class of 1997.

Class president Aaron Schultz will deliver the welcoming address and vice president Doug Wick will provide the closing address. Valedictorians for the class of ‘97 are Ryan Franchuck, Melissa Harvala, Jane Linderman, and Kelly Urness. Salutatorians are Melanie Brunsch and Kerri Short.

Business of the Week - Jackie’s Corner Grill by Jackie and Dave Engelhorn. Our business is a full-service restaurant, we serve breakfast, lunch, supper, pizza and beer. We also feature daily specials, monthly features and buffets. A tip on succeeding in our business is to listen and be open minded with our customers and employees. Some of the changes in our business right now are gourmet pizzas and new types of appetizers. A “perfect day” at work is when there are no equipment breakdowns, when our employees are happy and our customers have received their food quickly and are satisfied.

Harriet Anderson, Carrington, was the winner of the quilted wall hanging given away at Security State Bank of North Dakota as part of the quilt show observing April as Independent Community Bank month. Lea Dell, Carrington made the quilt.

Between 1990 and 1996 about 13,000 more people moved out of North Dakota. Only seven of the state’s 53 counties had a net increase in population for migration; Cass, Burleigh, Morton, Traill, Rolette, Ransom and Eddy. Eddy county saw a net migration increase of 23 persons. But overall its population dropped by 75 for a decrease of 4%. Foster County had a net migration loss of 92 persons for an overall loss of 117 persons, or 3%.

Midkota High School have four girls who will be attending Girl’s State this year. They are Mandy Bartlett, Tiffany Fisher, Amy Hoffman, and Natalie Stangeland.

Carrington High School girls that will be attending Girls State include Erin Nelson, Jennifer Willyard and Susan Merkle.

Playing at the Grand Theatre this weekend - “Anaconda.”
