Breezy wind conditions and temperatures in the 50s at Stadium '76 greeted the track and field runners, jumpers and throwers at the Kiwanis/Lions Track Meet Saturday, May 7.
For Carrington's Logan Weninger, it was a chance to break out of several near-misses and make his stake to Class B track's big show in his first full year of track since seventh grade.
The sophomore qualified for state in both the 200-meter dash in an even 23 seconds, and also bested the field in the 400 with a standard-beating 51.34 to become the latest Cardinal to make the cut for May 27-28.
Weninger also ran on the winning 4x400-meter relay team with Jacob Rexin, McKade Zink and Jacob Seaburg, crossing as the anchor in 3:49.84, and was part of the 4x200 which finished second with Zink, Ty Johnston and Jake Otto.
His efforts highlighted a third-place finish for the Cardinal boys with 98 points, best among Class B teams at the event. Jamestown and Devils Lake took the top two spots with 143.5 and 118.5 points.
Rexin got a win in the 800-meter run, as did Kael Kovar in pole vault. Rexin took second in the 1,600, and Seaburg was fourth in both the 800 and 1,600 runs.
Each finishing in third in their respective events were Zink in the 100 with an impressive 11.65 time for the eighth-grader, along with Ryder Bickett in javelin and Trace Hoggarth in the pole vault. The 4x100 team with Zink, Johnston, Otto and Bickett also took third.
Carrington's girls scored 132 points for runner-up status, only behind Jamestown at 175.
Kenadie Pazdernik was a double individual event winner, taking the one-mile (1,600) and two-mile (3,200) races, and also won as part of the 4x800 team with Madison Johnson, Baylee Lura and Kacie Rexin.
Edyn Hoornaert took the 800 in 2:34.28, and Kylie Skadberg was the pole vault winner at 8'6". Second place went to Johnson's 400 effort, and Mercedes Lura had two top-three showings in the 300 hurdles and pole vault.
The 4x100 team (Sierra Friedt, Hoornaert, Mercedes Lura and Skadberg) and the 4x400 (Johnson, Lura, Isabel Wendel and Hoornaert) were also winners for the Cards.
Additional point-scorers for Carrington at the meet were as follows:
