In what is widely considered to be the toughest region of Class B golf in the state of North Dakota, players have to bring their individual game to have much hope of earning state qualification.
The Carrington Cardinals had their best meet of the spring season on their home course at the Region 2 Tournament last Monday, May 23 at CrossRoads Golf Club, shooting a team total of 336.
Even with that effort, it was still 17 strokes behind the third place finishing school, Fargo Oak Grove, who nabbed the final team qualification spot for the State B Tournament at Oxbow May 31-June 1.
As expected, Kindred, winners of six of the last 10 state tournaments, won the team crown with 301. The Vikings had five of their six golfers meet the automatic individual standard of 79. Central Cass shot 314 for second place.
The Cards will have one player competing in Oxbow, senior Jacob Rexin. He matched his 79 score from the Region 2 individual qualifier one week earlier at CrossRoads, and finished in 12th place overall.
One other player came tantalizingly close to qualifying for state, but junior McCoy Beckley missed the cut by just one shot, shooting 40 on the front and the back nine for 80. Another junior, Carter Larson, shot 42-44-86.
Other Cardinal player scores included Wyatt Walker (43-48-91), Calvin Sisson (46-46-92) and Jacob Page (52-46-98).
Oak Grove senior Cody Card was the Region 2 medalist with a winning score of 69, six shots better than three others tied for second.
