With just three practice sessions under their belts, the Carrington Redbirds Babe Ruth team headed into the 2022 summer with the defending District 6 champion LaMoure A's as their opening day opponent.
That first-game rust and jitters were evident, as the A's put together a solid effort to defeat the Redbirds by 10-run-rule, 13-3, on June 6 at City Park.
Starting pitcher Corbin Clifton threw the first four innings, and had an up-and-down outing with five strikeouts while dealing with five walks. He gave up six runs, but several of those were unearned.
The Redbirds' reliever following Clifton, Josh Bickett, also was the victim of spotty defense behind him, as he allowed the final seven runs over two innings. Bickett walked two and struck out one.
For the game, Carrington managed seven hits. Two hitters, Tate Wolsky and Max Whitman, had two hits in their three at-bats, and single hits came off the bats of Clifton, Ethan Roller and Easton Mittleider.
LaMoure's offense was led by Gunner Thielges with a triple and two singles to go along with three runs scored. Avery Kramer had a double and two other hits, Jake Kramer managed three hits as well, and Colby Thielges also scored three runs with two singles.
Other A's players with multi-hit games included Jarin Ragan (triple) and Jakody Lewis.
The Redbirds played in Wishek last Thursday, July 9, and return to City Park for a home game against Steele at 5 p.m. today (June 13). Both matchups are District 6 contests.
Tomorrow, the team hits the road for a non-league game against Lisbon, starting at 5 p.m.
This year's team is coached by Mitch Page and Todd Bickett, with Randy Hooey serving as team manager.
The roster consists of 16 players, and this year's team is Peyton Harrington, Josh Bickett, Bryar Page, Ethan Roller, Taylen Mehring, Tate Wolsky, Nic Garber, Maddux McIlonie, Karson Sorensen, Hayden Somsen, Corbin Clifton, Ryder Bickett, Max Whitman, Cody Otto, Easton Mittleider and Jacob Boeshans.
The District 6 Tournament will be played in Oakes July 14-17, and the winner will advance to the State Class B Babe Ruth Tournament in Beulah to be held July 23-27.
