The Leslie Strand Scholarship recipients for the year 2022 have been announced by the Devils Lake Foundation.
Ezura Angeline Rainbow, a graduate of Minnewaukan Public School, is the granddaughter of Connie Rainbow. She has played volleyball and basketball and was named 2022 District 7 Senior Athlete of the Year, and 2022 Region 4 Senior Athlete of the Year. Her other activities include Suicide Prevention Team, band, choir, Prom Committee, Feed My Starving Children, playing softball in the summer and helping with elementary volleyball.
Her future plans are to attend Bismarck State College for a degree as a personal trainer.
Alexis Charboneau, a graduate of Minnewaukan Public School, is the daughter of Clemence Charboneau. She has been named to the school’s A and B honor roll and has played volleyball and basketball.
Her future plans are to attend Lake Region State College for a degree in nursing and to be become a nurse practitioner.
The Leslie Strand Scholarship Endowment Fund was established b Laura (Legacie) Strand in memory of her husband and son, both named Leslie Strand. The Leslie Strand Scholarship Endowment Fund is part of the Devils Lake Area Foundation, a charitable community trust.
Leslie N. Strand, the husband of Laura Strand, was editor of the Benson County Farmers Press at Minnewaukan from 1948-49, 1954-63 and 1967-70. He was editor and publisher of the Foster County Independent at Carrington when he died unexpectedly on Oct. 1, 1975, at the age of 60. Leslie J. Strand, son of Laura and Lee Strand, was a 1962 graduate of Minnewaukan High School. He was one of the owners of the We Fest at Detroit Lakes, Minn. He died Aug. 8, 1989 at the age of 45 as a result of injuries sustained in an auto accident the previous day.
