Four local cowboys and cowgirls traveled to the capital of high school rodeo in the state, Bowman, for the 2022 North Dakota High School Rodeo Association (NDHSRA) State Finals, held June 8-12.
Senior Logan Topp of Grace City qualified for the state rodeo in both tie down roping, finishing in 11th place in that event's year-end standings, and team roping, where he teamed up with Velva's Dani Fladeland to take eighth. He would make the Short Go in both events in Bowman, and had a very-fast 5.8 second run with Fladeland in the team event that was marred by breaking the barrier, incurring a penalty.
Topp would conclude with a fifth place state finals average in tie down roping.
Another senior, Carrington's Kaulder Kvamme, qualified for the NDHSRA Finals by achieving a ninth place position in steer wrestling. He won his first round with a 7.19 second time, but didn't get his steer down in round two, though he placed fourth in the average. In the Short Go, Kaulder also missed his steer, so he finished where he started, in ninth place. Also, he received a $500 scholarship for the North Dakota Pass the Hat Foundation.
His younger sister, junior Kirra, was a state entrant in both breakaway roping and barrel racing. In round one of breakaway, she posted a 13.71 with a barrier penalty, taking seventh in the performance and 12th in the round. Her second round was much better, as her 3.53 got her second in performance, fourth in round, and eighth in average. However, she missed in the short go, finishing 10th.
In the barrels, Kvamme clocked 15.794 (10th performance, 17th round) in round one, and 17.676 in round two (fourth and fourth, and also earning average points. Her final placing was 17th.
Fallon Lacina of Sykeston, a freshman, competed in girls' cow cutting, barrel racing and pole bending during the season. She took 11th in cow cutting in Bowman with her gelding, Pinky, and 16th in pole bending with her mare, Kricket.
Some highlights from Lacina during the season included splitting second place for cutting in New Salem with a 71.5 score. She would earn points from rodeos in West Fargo, Bismarck and Dickinson to qualify for the pole bending state finals.
She is coached by Kalie Anderson of Carrington and Kevin Vesey of Baldwin, and is currently a diploma student with the North Dakota Center for Distance Education.
Logan is the son of Ryan and Prairie Topp, and Kaulder and Kirra the children of Jeff and Jona Kvamme. Fallon is the daughter of Codie and Larry Larson, Jr. of Sykeston, and Daron Lacina of Pingree.
(Editor's Note: In the print edition, Topp's and Fladeland's team roping time was listed as 5.4 seconds. Corrected information that came to us after the Independent had gone to press stated that their actual time was 5.8 seconds.)
