The Carrington City Council unanimously voted at their meeting last week to hire Chamber of Commerce Director Laurie Dietz as the Carrington Economic Development Director.
Dietz will now oversee the whole CCEDC.
During the meeting held Monday, August 8, the council voted to allot the $25,000 that was left in the budget for the economic development director for the last half of the year.
In other business:
• The council heard from Kelly Hagel who attended the meeting to inform them that he and Interstate Engineering have a plan for the drainage on his property development near High Plains Equipment.
Travis Dillman of Interstate Engineering said the hydrolic analysis has been completed. Now they will need approval of the water board and the planning and zoning board.
A motion was passed to move forward with the plan.
• The council passed a motion to approve the contract between the city and the county for $15,000 for the Foster County Tax Equalization office to assess city properties over the next year.
Committee Reports
FIRE:
• Carrington Fire Chief Ken Wangen reported that the city received two fire calls since the last council meeting with one being a false alarm at Golden Acres Manor and Estates.
He also said that on the rural side of the fire calls, there had been a semi that burned in Bordulac and a controlled burn.
• Wangen said the fire department's pumper truck is in Minot for repairs.
Finally, Wangen stated the July 23rd fire school in Carrington was a success with 12 firefighters from Carrington attending among others.
FINANCE & LEGAL:
• Carrington Mayor Tom Erdmann reported that the police radios were received with reimbursement from the state coming.
• He also explained that the city will be sponsoring an animal clinic on August 24 at the armory for licensing and vaccinations for pets.
• Finally, Erdmann said the city sales tax is up $4,100 from this time last year.
CCEDC:
• In the minutes of the CCEDC, it states that they will be notified in August on the Strengthen ND grant application for Carrington Rainbow Gardens.
• Also noted in the minutes was the Regional Workforce Impact Program. This project that was presented to the regional council, was subject to a scoring and ranking process that determined which project in the region will be included in the RWIP application to the state.
Dietz was recently notified that the proposal did not receive enough points to move on to the state application.
• The Main Street elevator lots are ready to be advertised and the bid packet will be available soon.
CVB:
• The minutes of the Carrington Convention and Visitor's Bureau.
It stated that they discussed a donation to the Carrington Garden Club for assistance in watering the hanging flower baskets.
AIRPORT:
• The runway and taxiway project is slated to start the last part of august and continue into all of September.
POLICE:
• It was reported that the National Night Out was a great success.
• The police committee will be interviewing for the chief of police position.
• The council passed a motion to purchase a new 2022 Silverado for the police department.
• New officer Chris Bittman introduced himself to the council.
PUBLIC WORKS:
• Councilman Troy Roundy reported that the west-side water loop project will start in mid September.
• The public works department will be painting crosswalks and replacing signs.
• In a discussion about replacing the roof of city hall, the council learned that Carr Construction estimated that labor would be around $12,000 with shingles costing $11,500.
Apparently steel roofing is three to four times more costly than shingles.
Erdmann said they probably will wait till spring to start the job.
A motion was passed to allot up to $26,000 to replace the roof.
• The City will try and reopen the armory on the first of September, weather permitting.
BUILDING OFFICIAL:
• Public Works Director Jason Wolsky reported that there were six new building permits issued in the month of July.
