Phyllis Smith left for San Francisco Tuesday this week to represent the Pheasant Valley Seventh-day Adventist church at the North American Youth’s Congress which opens September 3rd for a four day session at San Francisco Civic Auditorium.
Mrs. Marie C. Owens of Bordulac and C.I. Owens of Bakersfield, Calif have announced the engagement of their daughter Patricia Ann and John E. Winegarden, Jr., of Ankeny, Iowa. A student at the University of Iowa the past year, Miss Owens is now employed in Des Moines. Mr. Winegarden, also a student at the University of Iowa this past year, will attend Drake University this fall.
Janice Irene Ecklund, daughter of Mrs. Effle Ecklund, New Rockford, and Lyle Henry Garrett, son of Mr. and Mrs. Jack Garrett, Carrington, were married Sunday, August 24, at 4 p.m. at the Lutheran parsonage, New Rockford, with the Rev. E.M. Sletter officiating.
Plans for renewing a drive for sufficient funds to build an addition to the Carrington hospital were discussed at a meeting of representatives of various organizations of the city last night.
Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Smith, formerly of Carrington, have purchased a grocery store at Campbell, Minn., taking possession on August 16. The deal included stock, fixtures and building.
In a deal closed this week, Leo Krenz became the owner of the Eldo Lee apartment house on East Main Street, formerly known as the Sinton House. Krenz will continue to operate the apartments. Lee will continue ownership of his new apartment building to the north of the property purchased by Krenz. Lee also owns the Stene Service Station premises.
Preparations are moving forward for the opening of the 1947-48 school term it was announced this week by Norman Hanson, superintendent. He reminded that the term opens on Monday, Sept. 8, and urged that all students be registered and ready to enter on that day.

August 24, 1972
The sudden 90-degree bend on Highway 200-52 west of Carrington was once again the scene of an accident as a tractor-trailer failed to negotiate a curve Sunday.
Two Minot residents were injured in the one-vehicle accident. Arbadell Bearman, 24, a passenger in the truck, transferred to a Minot hospital Monday. She suffered broken shoulder bones when she was thrown from the truck. Miss Bearman is the fiancee of the driver, Louis Robbins, Jr. 16. Robbins sustained leg bruises but was not hospitalized.
Bordulac stockman and flying enthusiast Darold Anderson recently joined the small number of licensed glider pilots within the state. Anderson acquired his commercial glider license in July after beginning instruction in the powerless aircraft the same month.
Five area young men have been placed in jobs following completion of training at the State School of Science at Wahpeton. Kim R. Stokes, Carrington, is now employed as a senior engineering assistant at University of Minnesota Plant Services at Morris. Leonard W. Neumiller, Carrington, is employed as an auto-body with Lake Chevrolet-Olds, Beulah, and John I. Williams of Sykeston is a sheet metal worker with Jamestown Heating and Plumbing, Alvin Melhouse is employeed as a repairman by Ashley Radio and TV in Ashley.
The International Music Camp 1972 European Tour Band and Choir, including three members from Carrington, will arrive in Winnipeg Aug. 24 after leaving Rome, Wednesday. Members of the group included Cyndee Leppke, Cathy Miller and Ona Ringerud of Carrington.

Small grain harvest in the state is slightly ahead of average, according to reports, and other crops like a sunflower field southeast of Carrington are looking good!
North Dakota’s harshest winters resulted in the smallest quarterly gains in the state’s economy since 1989. In a four-county area, only Wells County showed an increase in taxable sales and purchases in the first quarter of the year. Eddy, Foster and Griggs counties declined in the first three months of the year.
John David Collins, Ph.D. has joined the Foster County Medical Center. He is a clinical psychologist. He also works at Fort Winds School in Fort Totten two days a week.
Dick Engel of Carrington has been fascinated with ham radios for a long time. This interest led to a career, a hobby, and eventually a three and a half week tour in Grand Forks during the height of the flood. The Salvation Army called him and asked him if he would set up a communications center in Grand Forks. He set up a station at the AirBase. Its purpose was to provide communications for the Salvation Army to coordinate their activities.
Amber Joramo, a spring graduate of Sheyenne High School, has won 1-year tuition at UND-Lake Region. The “fabulous free future contest” was sponsored by radio stations KDVL-FM/KDLR-AM and the community college foundation.
Teri Lausch, manager of Stop-N-Go, was named manager of the month for June for the 26 Stop-N-Go stores in the district. This is the sixth such distinction for Lausch and she was manager of the year for Stop-N-Go in 1994.
The Carrington Area Chamber of Commerce yard of the week went to the home of Wes and Kathy Cabler, 330 Second Street North.
Area births - daughter, Alexandria Renae was born to Jyl Hoheisel and Christopher Richter August 13, 1997 at the Carrington Hospital. Daughter, Savannah Lyn, was born to Christina Rademacher, New Rockford, August 14, 1997.
Elaine Grahn is retiring from First American Bank after 29 years. An open house to celebrate her retirement will be August 29th.
