Braves throw for five scores in win over Hornets

The Bottineau Braves had a total of 476 yards and scored on drives of two plays or less three different times on their way to defeating the Hornets by 26 points on Friday, September 9, at L.C. Loerch Field at Veterans Memorial Park in Harvey.

There were fireworks everywhere to start the game. Bottineau started the scoring on the first offensive play of the game as Ryler Pollman found Khaliel Abdurrahman on a 51-yard scoring strike and with the PAT run by Jacob Shriver, the Braves led 8-0 with just 18 seconds off the clock.

Harvey-Wells County was not to be outdone, as they also scored on their first offensive play of the game as Tallen Thorson found Kayl Sieg on a 76-yard screen pass for the score. HWC missed the PAT and trailed 8-6.

Bottineau kept their next drive short also, as Jacob Shriver took the first play on the second drive off right tackle for a 73- yard score. The PAT pass to Gabriel Nero was good and the score was 16-6, Bottineau, with still over 11 minutes left to play in the first quarter.

Both teams settled down a little on the next couple of drives, as both had short drives that ended in punts. The Hornets finished the first quarter scoring on a long 90-yard drive on just nine plays, culminating in a 18-yard run from Sieg. The PAT to Gabe Allmaras pulled HWC to within 16-14 after one quarter.

The first play of the second quarter saw the Braves connect on another long play, as Pollman found Nero on a 64-yard strike. The PAT was good to Eli Bristol for a Bottineau 24-16 lead.

The Hornets matched the Braves' score as Thorson scored on a 20-yard run. The PAT pass was incomplete as HWC kept it close, 24-20.

Bottineau finished up the scoring in the first half with a seven-play, 62-yard drive ending in a 17-yard pass to Carson Haerer. The PAT pass failed.

The Hornets drove the ball all the way down to the five-yard line, but with time running out in the half, could not muster the yardage to get it into the end zone as the clock ran out for halftime.

The Braves wasted little time finding paydirt in the third quarter. After a nice stop by the Bottineau defense, Pollman found Haerer on the second play of the drive for a 59-yard strike and score. The PAT pass moved the score to 38-20.

The Braves' defense stepped up on the next drive and defended the Hornets three passes to force a HWC punt. The ensuing drive took a little longer for the Braves, as they traveled 73 yards in 10 plays, ending in a 20-yard passing score from Pollman to Bristol. The PAT was successful, and the Brave lead grew to 46-20 after three.

The Hornets continued to pile up the yardage in the fourth quarter, but could not find the one or two plays needed to put points on the board.

Thorson went over 300 yards passing in the game in the fourth as well, as Gabe Allmaras going over 100 yards in the receiving department.

The Braves' last drive lasted just over eight minutes, as every play was a rush and they ran the clock out by kneeling on the ball three times and ending the game with a score of 46-20.
