Carrington infant dies after suffering brain injury

Yet another local family is in need of community support.

Reed Nelson, 5-month-old son of Jesse and Brittany Nelson of Carrington, died in a Fargo hospital after suffering a brain injury.

On Monday, September 26, Jesse and Brittany received a phone call that no parent wants to hear. Reed was unresponsive, and first responders were called to his child care provider's home. Carrington Police Chief Chris Bittmann was among those who responded to the call, where he administered CPR to revive Reed.

Reed was sent by ambulance to CHI St. Alexius in Carrington. Upon further evaluation, local providers quickly decided Reed needed to be airlifted to Fargo.

After a few tests, the doctors found two brain bleeds Monday night. Reed was intubated, his medical team advised that the prognosis was not good. Reed passed away around mid-day Wednesday. What caused the injury is unknown at this time.

A GoFundMe campaign started by Kyrie (O'Connor) Dauenhauer, Jesse's first cousin, had reached its $10,000 goal in little more than 24 hours. But more is needed to cover the mounting costs of the one-on-one, round-the-clock care required for brain trauma patients, and now for his funeral expenses.

A benefit account has been set up for the family at Bank Forward in Carrington. Checks can be made payable to either Jesse Nelson or Brittany Nelson.
