Hillsboro-Central Valley (HCV) and Harvey-Wells County (HWC) played a great first half, but the visiting Burros got the most out of their second half scoring 22 unanswered points to leave with a 36-6 win at L.C. Loerch Field in Harvey, on Friday, September 23.
HCV started quickly in this Region 4 matchup. The Burros forced a HWC turnover on the Hornets' first drive as Peter Dryburgh stepped in front of a screen pass and with the interception gave the Burros excellent field position. The Burros used their powerful running game as Landon Olsen ran for 10 yards and Cole Hebl for 11, setting up an 11-yard run from quarterback Riley Olsen for the score. The PAT from Micah Longthorne gave HCV the early lead of 7-0.
The Hornets' next drive ended in just four plays, as they turned the ball over on downs after a sack on a fourth down attempt. A short field is just what HCV needed, as Olsen found Longthorne on a 25- yard strike for the Burros second score of the night and a quick 14-0 lead.
The second quarter really only had two possessions, as the Hornets kept the ball for the first four minutes and 24 seconds of the quarter.
HWC used a nine-play 65 yard drive to add their first points to the scoreboard. Sophomore Kayl Sieg started the drive with an 11-yard scamper, but the big play of the drive was a reverse option with a 32 yard pass from Gabe Allmaras to Brock Fike, setting up HWC at the Burro 12-yard line. A four yard pass to Keaton Keller set up Sieg for the one yard plunge as the Hornets trailed just 14-6.
The Burros had an impressive drive late in the second, as they moved the ball down to the HWC seven yard line but the Hornet defense flexed its muscles and stopped HCV on four consecutive plays ending the Burro drive at the 3-yard line. The Hornets ran one play and got out of the half trailing by just six points.
The Burros did not waste any time in the second half, as a nice kick return set them up at the 39-yard line. A 13-yard run from Hebl was followed up by a 42-yard touchdown run from Landon Olsen, and with the PAT kick the score quickly moved to 22-6.
The HCV defense played outstanding in the second half, and started with an interception on the Hornet first drive. The Burros used six runs and set up a 27-yard scoring strike from Olsen to Kyle Haffey to move the score to 29-6.
The HWC offense continued to move the ball well, but could not find any breathing room as far as the scoring column. A nice kickoff return by Tallen Thorson started a 10-play drive which ended at the Burro 17-yard line. After the turnover on downs forced by the HCV defense, Hebl ran for 34 yards and the Burros eventually scored on a 30-yard pass from Olsen to Hebl to make the final score 36-6.
Statistically, the Hornets were held to their lowest passing totals of the season as Thorson and Allmaras combined for 124 yards passing. Keller pulled in five passes for 44 yards while Thorson was the leading rusher with 20. Harrison Lies led the defense on the night with 12 tackles with three of those being for loss of yardage.
The win moved HCV to 5-1 on the season and 5-0 in Region 2 play while the Hornets dropped to 2-4 in region play and overall.
