From the Past: Mobile x-ray unit here next week

75 Years Ago

October 16, 1947

Personality, poise, scholarship and activities will be the criteria upon which 14 University of North Dakota girls will be judged for Homecoming queen, Dorothy Hanson, Grand Forks, chairman, announced. Among the candidates is Mary K. Nicolson, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Don Nicholson, Carrington.

Injured in a plowing accident on Tuesday of last week. C.W. Conklin, farmer northwest of Carrington, was making improvement this week although still confined to his bed; but his suffering was eased immeasurably Tuesday by the kindness of his neighbors. Eight neighbors gathered to complete the plowing.

All boys and girls winning Dairy Day calves in 1947 showed their calves at the Foster County Junior Fair. It was stated this week by Geo. F. Stewart, county agent. Entering the calves in competition, Leila Mae Lura, Carrington, won a blue ribbon award; Lester Zink, Bordulac, red ribbon and Reddy Flaser, Jr., and Darlene Kurtz, Sykeston white ribbons.

Scheduled for arrival in Foster County next week is the mobile x-ray unit which is sponsored by the State Department of Health to give all citizens an opportunity for free chest x-ray examinations.

The 4-H Club boys with their leader, Otto Richter, met at the schoolhouse Wednesday evening. Final arrangements were made to take their animals and poultry to New Rockford Saturday, October 18, to participate in the county achievement day. The 4-H Club girls under the direction of Mrs. Mae Ludwig and Mrs. Albert Utecht also will display their work, with Mrs. Roy Topp doing the judging.

Beverly Johanns and Russell Ehlers were married at a double ring ceremony in Jessie on Sunday. Father Ludwig performed the wedding. Attendants were Melvin Midgeley and Mrs. Leo Bartlett, sister of the groom.

50 Years Ago

October 11, 1972

Newly elected officers of Carrington’s Kiwanis Club include: Lowell Swart, president; John Speidel, vice president; J.A. Gilje, secretary; Rev. James Schoeld, treasurer; and Inge Noraker, director. New directors are Robert Forbes and James Stewart. Hold-over members of the board are Lyle Evans, Duane Mahin, Swart, Speidel and Noraker.

Mrs. Bennie Graff will serve as Foster County chairman for the Rural Americans for McGovern drive, it was announced by the McGovern for President campaign.

Howard and Douglas Berglund have advanced to the third level of Punt, Pass and Kick competition. They were first place winners in area competition in Jamestown and earned the right to compete at Moorhead, Oct. 14.

The Carrington boys, sons of Mr. and Mrs. Gerald Berglund, were local winners in age group competition. Douglas is 12; Howard is 10. Other local winners were Mark Miller, 9, Keith Hambrick, 11 and Dave Gjerdevig, 13.

Election of officers for the Carrington Gold Club was held on the final stag night of the season Thursday. Mel Zaun succeeds Bud Semmens as president. Steve Wenaas is the new vice president. Al Larson is secretary-treasurer succeeding Don Heinitz.

King Jerome Zink and Queen Terri Scheck began their reign as the head of a parade minutes after their coronation during CHS Homecoming.

Carrington artist Mary Mickele was a winner in two contests held by state organizations recently. Her poster for the “Hire the Veteran” campaign placed second in statewide competition and may be used in future campaigns. She was awarded a $50 savings bond. Miss Mickele’s design was selected as the emblem to be used on all official correspondence of the Governor’s Conference on Human Resources.

556 Herefords owned by John Gross, Jr. were on a cattle drive to their new fall pasture on Steve Reimers’ land near Arrowwood. The route covered 26 miles. Two days were needed to herd the cattle to their destination. Gross will pasture them there until the snow flies which then he will truck them back to home ground.

October 13, 1997

Gail Kollman, manager of the baking department at Carrington Super Valu, air brushed a dolphin design on a cake using food coloring on rolled butter cream frosting to win the North Bakers Association of North Dakotas annual design.

Lee’s Construction, Kensal, had earth moving equipment at the Carrington Research/Extension Livestock Unit last week preparing ground for the new bison feedlot. The area that will be used to research the feeding habits of the bison is located along US 281 just east of the livestock unit.

Jolene Dalbec was awarded the Carrington Chamber of Commerce Employee of the Month for September.

Carrington sixth-graders Clara Presser, Brooke Linderman and Tracy Kubal performed at the third annual “Surround the State in Song” children’s choral festival in Grand Forks.

The Children’s Theatre Company made a stop in Carrington this week giving two performances of Tomi dePalo’s “Strega Nona.”

Michelle Fortney and Kelly Fike were married July 12 at Bowdon Lutheran Church with Rev. Chris Anderson officiating. Parents of the couple are Pat Fortney, Bowdon, the late David Fortney and Jerome and Karen Fike, Chaseley.

Area birth - boy, Jonathen Wayne, 6 pounds, 10 ounces, born October 2 to Andrew and Fayette Hardy of New Rockford.

The second week of foreign exchange students attending Carrington High School features Ana Draghict from Dusseldorf, Germany, a population of 600,000. The first thing that struck Ana was “the land around Carrington was so flat and that surprised me,” she said. Draghict studied English for six years in school prior to arriving in Carrington. The primary reason she wanted to come to the United States was to improve her English skills. Ana also wanted to meet people and learn about different customs and cultures. “Americans are not shy at all. They are outgoing, friendly and helpful. You can’t do that in Germany. I wouldn’t dare.” Draghict has been staying with the Mark and Mary Brakel family.
