The Official Newspaper for Foster County
The most tell-tale sign of weekend success for the Carrington Cardinals, specifically when they host their Varsity Tournament, is when they play well enough to stay in the West Gym for all six games.
CHS came out on the winning end of all 12 of their sets, earned the top overall seed and took the championship Saturday afternoon, October 8, with a two-set win over the M-P-B Thunder (25-13 in both games).
Starting bright and early at 8 a.m., the Cards took Pool A victories against HWC, Velva and the Hettinger-Scranton Nighthawks. The Hornets were the only team to take Carrington to extra points for the day, ultimately falling by a 25-27 score before the home squad took a big 14-point win in set two.
In tournament play, Coach Megan Trautman’s squad won a hard-fought 25-23, 25-20 battle over the Bishop Ryan Lions in the quarterfinals, and took a pair of 25-19 victories against Strasburg-Zeeland in the semifinals before facing M-P-B for first place.
In personal milestones, senior libero Mya Schroeder achieved her 1,000th career dig at the tournament. Schroeder has done well to come back for her final season on the court, after sustaining an ACL tear in last year’s basketball season.
M-P-B also took three wins in Pool B, defeating Griggs/Midkota, 25-11, twice, and earning split-set wins on points over the Rugby Panthers and Jamestown junior varsity team to claim the number two seed for tournament play.
The Thunder would meet up again with Rugby in the quarterfinal round, winning a marathon 27-26 first set and riding that momentum for a 25-13 win in the final game. In the semifinal round, the Thunder and New Rockford-Sheyenne played very competitive volleyball, in which M-P-B ultimately won in three sets, 24-26, 25-11 and 15-10.
NR-S would finish fourth on Saturday, dropping a three-set thriller (23-25, 25-21, 13-15) to the S-Z Clippers.
G-M had their struggles in Carrington, finishing with an 0-4 record for the Saturday slate. The Titans were defeated by Jamestown JV and Rugby in pool play, along with their aforementioned loss to the Thunder, and the young Blue Jays ended the Titans’ tourney early with a two-set defeat.
HWC also finished winless at the tournament. See Lane Moellenkamp’s article for Hornet stats from the tournament.
