Tornadoes oust Cards in four sets; Oakes earns #2 seed

It wasn't the five-set marathon that these two evenly-matched programs have been accustomed to playing over the last few years, but the Carrington Cardinals and Oakes Tornadoes met up for some hotly-contested tension at the nets in Tornado Alley Tuesday night, October 11.

The Cards fell in four games to the Tornadoes, 21-25, 25-15, 19-25 and 18-25, giving Oakes (5-1 District 5) the number two seed for the upcoming District 5 Volleyball Tournament at Barnes County North in Leal October 27, 28 and 31. Carrington (3-2 District record) has the inside track for the number three seed, with one league match against Griggs/Midkota remaining tonight (October 17).

Carrington played even up with the host Tornadoes in set one, flipping the lead back and forth, before Oakes made a late run to erase a slight 19-18 deficit and take the first set by four.

The second set featured the best sustained play by the Cards for the match, as they would build a lead of as many as 10 points and kept the foot on the gas for the set victory.

Both sets three and four featured quick starts by CHS, but Oakes would not be denied on this night. Leads of 9-4 and 10-5 in those two games would not be enough to stem the path of Oakes' oncoming storm, and the Tornadoes would take the sets and the match.

Statistics for the Cards were unavailable when this issue of the Independent went to press.
