One remarkable streak of sustained excellence for the Carrington volleyball program went by the wayside at the District 5 Tournament at Barnes County North School in Leal, but a much more important one lives on.
For every year since they moved to District 5 from their old home of District 7, the Cards have played in the tournament championship match, a string dating back to 2015.
This year, however, CHS had to qualify for the Region 3 Tournament in Napoleon through the back door, following a three-set loss to Oakes in the semifinal round.
Carrington took a 25-15, 25-12 and 25-21 win over Ellendale in the qualifier last Monday night, October 31, to enter regional action as the district's third seed and keep their long streak of regional appearances intact.
In that match, Madison Johnson and Haley Wolsky both had nine kills to lead the Cards. Emma Hone had five blocks, including a whopping 13 for the tournament.
Three players had 15 digs each versus Ellendale, those being Kacie Rexin, Mya Schroeder and Isabel Wendel.
Rexin and Wendel switched off at setter throughout the tournament, finishing with numbers of 41 for Wendel and 31 in Rexin's column.
Johnson posted three service aces in the qualifier.
In round one on Thursday, October 27, the third-seeded Cards took on sixth seed Griggs/Midkota, and came out with a 25-12, 25-11 and 25-20 triumph.
Johnson led CHS with seven kills. Rexin hit for four aces, and Wendel was the top back row passer with 16 digs.
Second seed Oakes met up with the Cards on Friday evening, October 28. The semifinal clash proceeded similarly to games between the evenly-matched programs, going point-for-point for good portions of the first two sets.
Carrington had leads in each of those opening games, but Oakes came out on top with 25-18 and 25-23 results, and largely controlled the third set from the get-go in another 25-18 final to send the Cards to the regional qualifier.
Wolsky hit 12 kills for Carrington in defeat, and Edyn Hoornaert also had a good game with seven. Aces against the stingy Tornado back row were hard to come by, with Schroeder leading the way by hitting two.
A pair of players hit or surpassed 20 digs against Oakes, with Schroeder's 29 pacing play for CHS. Wendel had 20 in the loss.
Statistics for Oakes, Ellendale and Griggs/Midkota in the matches with CHS were not available.
In the other Monday qualifier, Edgeley-Kulm-Montpelier eliminated Griggs/Midkota in three sets (see related story) to take District 5's fourth seed.
The championship match was an epic clash between Oakes and LaMoure/Litchville-Marion that went to five sets. The Loboes did just well enough to prevail with a 15-13 win in the final set.
Postseason awards went to Allison Jarrett, Schroeder and Wolsky for making the All-District 5 Team. Oakes took both the Senior Athlete and Coach of the Year honors, which respectively went to Laikyn Roney and Katelyn Hagen.
Region 3 starts today (November 7) in Napoleon. L-L-M faces District 6 fourth seed South Border in the first match at 3 p.m., followed by Carrington taking on Strasburg-Zeeland 20 minutes after the conclusion of the first game.
In the evening session, two-time defending Region 3 and Class B champion Linton-HMB is matched up with E-K-M, and M-P-B faces Oakes in the nightcap.
