Thunder on to regional with wins

Seeded third going into the District 6 Tournament in Ashley, the Medina/Pingree-Buchanan Thunder rebounded from a semifinal setback to make their way back to the Region 3 Tourney.

The Thunder opened with a three-set win over the #6 seed Kidder County Wolves (26-24, 25-9, 25-20) Friday, October 28, behind 14 kills and 24 digs from junior outside hitter Allison Thomas.

Combining for 14 kills as well were Brynn Sorenson and Maddie Gefroh, and Sorenson also had 20 digs for M-P-B.

Kidder County statistical leaders were not available.

The number two-seeded Strasburg-Zeeland Clippers showed off their power in the Monday semifinal round, and took a four-set win over the Thunder, 22-25, 25-22, 18-25, 22-25.

Clipper senior Lilly Haak proved unstoppable for the M-P-B blockers, with 25 kills in the loss. Grace Haak also was in double digits with 10 kills to her credit, and owned the net on her end with four blocks.

Also for S-Z, Becky Wikenheiser finished with four aces, and Charli Peterson had 39 assists while Jadyn Ternes kept play alive with 35 digs for the Clippers.

Gefroh and Thomas both slammed 12 kills in the loss for M-P-B and Sorenson finished with 10. Thomas, Alaina Bosche and Sorenson all combined for 89 digs.

The final match against Napoleon/Gackle-Streeter in the Region 3 qualifier had its tense moments, but M-P-B gutted out a pivotal 27-25 win in set three to go up 2-1 instead of trail by that score, and dispatched the Imperials by a 25-16 score in the final set.

In defeat for N-G-S, Teagan Erbele led the Imperials with 12 kills, and Sophie Ketterling had 24 digs and Tristan Gross 22. Emma Ketterling finished with 21 assists.

Thomas led the Thunder with 17 kills, and Gefroh had another solid match on the attack with 12. Gefroh had two aces, and Kelsey Vandeberghe led M-P-B with four stuff blocks.

The aforementioned dig trio for the Thunder had the three top performances in that statistic and finished with 74 overall.

For the tournament, setter Lilly Bohl had an even 100 assists covering the three matches. She, along with Thomas, were named to the All-District 6 Team.

The awards didn't stop for the Thunder, as Jacie Connell was voted the district's Coach of the Year for her work guiding M-P-B on the court this season.

In the final match of the night tonight (November 7) in Napoleon, the Thunder face a rematch with the Oakes Tornadoes. Oakes handed M-P-B one of its two straight-set losses this season on October 18.
