A tough season for the Griggs/Midkota Titans, which came with an emergency coaching change part way through the schedule, came to an end in the qualifying round at the District 5 Tournament at Barnes County North.
The Titans dropped their first match to Carrington (see related story) on Thursday, October 27, then kept their season alive with a win in the Friday loser-out match against the host Bison (25-14, 27-25, 25-22).
Last Monday, with a Region 3 berth on the line, the Edgeley-Kulm-Montpelier Rebels put a swift end to the Titans' designs on advancement with a 7-25, 15-25 and 12-25 loss.
Attempts were made to get statistics for the Titans from their three District 5 matches, but the Independent was unsuccessful in those efforts as of press time.
For E-K-M, All-District 5 honoree Mataeya Mathern led the Rebels with 10 kills and 11 digs, the latter statistic matched by the team's other All-District player, libero Tiahna Wald.
Reagan Teske peppered the Titan back row with seven aces from the service line to go along with her nine kills, and setter Abby Mathern had 20 assists and Grace Irey a pair of blocks.
Griggs/Midkota's season came to a close with a 6-17 record, but the Titans played inspired volleyball at times under the direction of interim Head Coach Presley Paintner.
Paintner, one of the Titans' assistants, stepped into the job when first-year Head Coach Carissa Mehus was unable to finish the season due to pregnancy-related health complications.
The Monday match finished the net careers of seniors Andie Anderson, Asia Becherl, Lauryn Halvorson and Kaylee Johnson.
