As the luck of the schedule maker would have it, it took three full days before Carrington and Griggs/Midkota renewed acquaintances.
Fresh off the Cards’ 55-44 win in the consolation championship in the Stutsman County Tournament, the Cards and Titans locked up once again, this time in a District 5 counter at the East Gym.
A 13-1 run for Carrington set the tone right from the whistle, and they withstood an early spurt of the Titans’ own to take a 24-point victory, 61-37, and improve to 2-0 in district games.
Carrington (6-2) witnessed G-M get as close as 15-13 early in the second on an 11-2 run by the Titans, but they would score nine of the last 11 points in the period to take a 24-15 lead at the break which was never challenged after that point.
There was some good mojo with the number 13 for a change, as three Cardinal players, Jack Erickson, Hudson Schmitz and Grady Shipman, all matched that point total to finish as tri-leaders.
Jack Paulson also had eight points for the Cards in the victory.
Griggs/Midkota dropped to 3-6 and 0-2 in District 5, and were topped in the scoring column by eight points from Wyatt Spickler. Latrell Rainey added seven points before fouling out in the fourth quarter.
This Tuesday, the Titans entertain visiting LaMoure/Litchville-Marion in Cooperstown, and hope to exact a measure of revenge Thursday night in Glenfield against M-P-B. The Thunder came from behind to defeat G-M at the Stutsman County first round, 45-39, earlier this season.
Meanwhile, CHS plays host to nonregion opponent May-Port-CG on Tuesday night, and undertakes a big District 5 clash on Saturday in the East Gym when eighth-ranked and unbeaten Ellendale comes to town for an afternoon matinee.
