This shoutout is for readers who have read a million words or more. There are a few new millionaires this quarter in our school. They are Nick Pierson, James Rau, Gabe Inglish, and Theodore Ostlie. We also have some 2 Millionaire Readers. They are Henry Pavelko and Noah Gussiaas. One million word readers get a movie ticket to the Youth Center and two Millionaire readers get a book light.

Mathcounts

By Howie Simonson

Math counts is an extracurricular activity where students in grades 6, 7, 8 get to advance their math skills. Mathcounts practice takes place every Tuesday morning before school. Kamae Anderson, the middle school math teacher, is the advisor. Each week the people in Mathcounts get two worksheets; one to practice target rounds, and one to practice sprint rounds. For target rounds you get 6 minutes to do two questions using a calculator. For sprint rounds you get 40 minutes to do 30 questions without using a calculator. In sixth grade, Mya Neis and Howie Simonson advanced to regionals. Other participants in sixth grade were Brookie Almond and Laken Johnson. Congrats to all who participated!

Steam Day at CES

By Brooklyn Knudson

Around the school on December 20th, we did a STEAM DAY challenge. STEAM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math. Each grade had a different challenge to do based on their assigned country for "Christmas Around the World." Kindergarten had the (Artic) North Pole and they built a pen for the reindeer using toothpicks and gumdrops. Next was 1st grade, who got Mexico. Their challenge was to make a Three Kings cake using paper and tape, but they had to hide a sticker in the paper cake. In 2nd grade they got Italy, and the challenge they got was La Befana's broom. They got a pencil and paper to make a broom that they had to throw , and see whose went the farthest. 3rd grade got The United States of America.. Their challenge was to build a table for Santa's cookies. They got some straws and a notecard to build a table that will hold candy and see whose can hold the most. 4th grade got the Netherlands, and they made a jingle bell maze. They got straws, construction paper, tape, and a bell to make a maze. Next is 5th grade with France. They had to make a shoe with paper and tape, but it had to fit their foot. 6th grade had to make a cup stack tree without using their hands. They had pipe cleaners, rubber bands, plastic red cups, and paper. They also had to decorate the tree and have a tree topper. A huge thank you to Mrs Park, Mary , and everyone else who helped put this project together!
