Beverly Briss, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Briss, Kensal, died in a Jamestown hospital Tuesday after an illness of several days. She was about 3½ years old.
John Harlin Buchanan, son of John G. Buchanan, Carrington, was enlisted in the United States Navy as an apprentice seaman on February 26. He was sworn in by Lr. Commander R. L. Lowe, USN officer in charge of the North Dakota main recruiting station for the Navy in Bismarck.
Mable L. Coyne of La Moure, is home extension agent in Foster County following appointment from the NDAC Extension office and approval of the board of commissioners of Foster County.
Richard Hjellum and Rodney Ecklund, Carrington youths attending the University of North Dakota are members of the university glee club on a trip to Chicago. Selected to make this trip were 25 out of a group of 58 at the university.
The deep snowfall of last Friday and Saturday - 40 hours of it - left all communities in the county isolated and in each some hardship was experienced. The city of McHenry, however, bore the brunt of the wintry weather.
Except for last Thursday, the only method of transportation out of McHenry was by airplane, and an occasional train, in a period of two weeks. In fact train service has been at a minimum there, as the town was without train service at all from last Thursday to Tuesday of this week.
An enlarged recreation program is in sight in Carrington as the result of action taken by the city park board, it is announced by Hilding Johnson, board president.
The Cathay High School basketball team won first place at the district tournament held at New Rockford Thursday, February 26.

Much uncertainty surrounds the fate of the Midway Daycare Center following reports that federal funds for it and other daycare centers will soon be terminated.
The Carrington City Council lost one of its members Monday evening as alderman Wallace Purcell submitted his resignation to Mayor Alvin Paulson. Purcell explained to the council that he has accepted civil service employment and will be working with the National Guard in Valley City.
“With St. Patrick’s Day soon near, it’s time to think green,” is the advice of members of Carrington High School Future Homemakers of America. Chapter members are preparing for the “Shamrocks for Dystrophy” drive, which they are sponsoring locally as their state project of the FHA chapter.
Two National Guardsmen in Carrington’s Company A of the 141st Engineering Battalion have been promoted to sergeant, according to company commander Capt. Dale Townsend.
Frank Sobolik, whose rank was Specialist 5, has moved up to Staff Sergeant. James Kutz, formerly a Specialist 4, has been promoted to sergeant and is assigned as an assistant squad leader.
The official institution of Carrington Sons of Norway Lodge No. 527 will be held Friday evening, Mar. 16, at 6:30 p.m. at the Chieftain Motor Lodge.
Mr. and Mrs. John Klocke of New Rockford announce the engagement of their daughter, Shirley Mae, to Daniel Gross, son of Mr. and Mrs. Dan Gross, Sr., of Carrington. A June wedding is planned.
Gayla Rae Larson and James R. Kutz were married Feb. 24 in St. Elizabeth Church, Sykeston, with Fr. Schuster officiating. Larry Polries and Charles Kutz were altar boys.
Sykeston community observes the completion of a 3-year project with the Lake Hiawatha Development Corporation. Over 200 visitors came to inspect two apartments of an eight-unit housing project. The eight-apartment units are housed in two one-story buildings located just off Main Street in the center of Sykeston.

Six vie for Miss Carrington, Central Dakota titles this Saturday. The contestants are Sherri Fossum from Rolette, she is a 1997 graduate. Kelly Urness, a 1997 Carrington High School graduate, Kerri Short, a 1997 Carrington High School graduate, Tammi Bauer, a 1997 Carrington High School graduate, Shannon Harrington, a 1997 West Fargo High School graduate and Melissa Badger, from Grand Forks.
Alliance Pipeline estimates for North Dakota: $3,474,000 tax bill. Foster county could see $250,000, Eddy County $40,000. Upon regulatory approval in both the U.S. and Canada, Alliance Pipeline will begin construction of a pipeline that will transport natural gas through 13 counties in North Dakota. Upon completion of the first full year of operation, Alliance estimates it will pay a total of $3,474,000 per year in property /ad valorem taxes in North Dakota.

Ruth Braaten’s kindergarten class had children’s moms as guest speakers for Reading Month. Cindy Hewitt, Tyler’s mom, was one of several participating in “Guest Reader Week”. Mrs. Braaten’s class featured parent readers and popcorn and pop for the students. Carol Collins, added a different twist by bringing Nathan along for a sit in Mom’s lap during her story. She’s the mother of kindergartener Eric. Joan Copenhaver, elementary counselor and mother of Kirsten, was a hit with two-week old Jacob as a special guest.
