Rebels' revenge: E-K-M ends CHS' State B pursuit

In the first quarter of their Region 3 semifinal, it seemed that when the Edgeley-Kulm-Montpelier Rebels gave Carrington an inch, the Cards would take a mile.

The Rebs were half a step slow in defending a four three-pointer barrage in the first eight minutes for CHS, and the Cardinal shooters were on fire in a 22-point period.

But the law of averages being what they are, the Cards weren't going to shoot like that forever.

And E-K-M's Mataeya Mathern and Kiara Jangula kept their squad afloat in the second, made a run in the third to eliminate the 12-point deficit, and shut down a shell-shocked Cardinal team in the fourth to put an end to their tournament run, 55-49.

Kacie Rexin hit two of those first-half threes for Carrington, and Madison Johnson had a three in the first and one in the second quarter. Haley Wolsky also contributed to the fast start with a trey of her own, as the Cards led, 22-10, after one and 30-20 at the break.

The third quarter would end up being the turning point in the Rebs' favor, in a big way. Mataeya Mathern drove around the Cards' help defense on several plays for layups, and Reagan Teske had five points in the stanza to bring CHS' cushion down to just one, 40-39.

E-K-M broke through thanks to clutch shots from Jangula late, as she went 3-for-3 from the line and had five points, including a three in the fourth quarter.

Mataeya Mathern finished with 17 points, all in the last three quarters, and she led E-K-M with seven rebounds, two assists, two steals and two blocks. Jangula had 13 points for the Rebels, and Libby Mathern added 10.

Rexin paced the Cards with 16 points, including two more threes in the second half, and also had four steals. Wolsky had six fourth quarter points to finish with 14, but she and Rexin were the only Cards to score down the stretch.

Isabel Wendel had 11 points, eight of those in the first half.

The stirring win was an omen of things to come for the Rebels, as they withstood a spirited challenge from Linton-HMB to take a 41-38 win in the Region 3 championship.

In that game, Mataeya Mathern put the team squarely on her back, scoring 30 points.

E-K-M drew top overall seed Thompson in the State B Tournament at Minot, which began last Thursday.
