Whether we’re stranded inside for another blizzard or out walking the dog on a bright spring day, running or driving a tractor or – hopefully soon – or enjoying some R & R while camping, having a book along can make the whole experience more enjoyable.
While it would not be wise to walk the dog or drive a tractor while flipping through the pages of the latest bestseller, you can certainly enjoy the story while walking or driving if you’re “reading” an audiobook.
Carrington City Library provides access to 26,000 audiobooks and 43,000 ebooks through the North Dakota Digital Consortium. The collection includes fiction and nonfiction in a variety of genres and for all ages. All you need to access hundreds of hours of reading pleasure is a digital device (phone, tablet, or computer), the free Libby by OverDrive app and a library card!
Here are some popular titles to check out:
Fiction: “The Last Thing He Told Me” by Laura Dave, “The Four Winds” by Kristin Hannah, “The Lincoln Highway” by Amor Towles, “The Judge’s List” by John Grisham and “Where the Crawdads Sing” by Delia Owens.
Nonfiction: “Educated” by Tara Westover, “Waxing On” by Ralph Macchio, “The Courage to be Free” by Ron DeSantis, “The Nazi Conspiracy” by Brad Meltzer and “Unbroken” by Laura Hillenbrand.
The audiobook and e-book collection includes picture books and chapter books. While audiobooks have traditionally been used to help English language learners, research by the National Literacy Trust has found that audiobooks for children and young adults help to build comprehension skills and can motivate struggling or reluctant readers.
Sometimes children will sit down with a print copy and listen while they read along. At other times, children – especially those who can’t seem to sit still – find that they can listen, understand, and enjoy a book more when they are allowed to be physically moving. Chapter books can be enjoyed by the whole family while on a road trip or reading and listening can become part of the evening routine.
While using the Libby app, a reader can choose audio vs ebook format, select favorite subjects or genres, and narrow the audience (child, young adult, adult). Books can be checked out for 14 days and are automatically returned at the end of that period, unless they are renewed or returned early.
