Three CHS archers move on to national tournament

Despite the frightful travel conditions, local archers made their presence known at the North Dakota State National Archery in the Schools Program (NASP) Tournament in Minot last weekend.

Carrington High School brought 39 archers to the tournament Friday afternoon and had participants shooting in four straight flights.

Three Cardinals earned a trip to the NASP Western Nationals in Sandy, Utah on April 28 and 29 by scoring in the top 10 of their respective divisions.

Brekka Kuss rose to the top of the leaderboard for the Cardinals in the bullseye tournament. She scored a 284 and finished eighth among high school girls. She also had the 10th highest overall girl's score.

Seniors Braden Kruse and Gavyn Anderson also earned a trip to nationals in their final season with the Cardinals.

Kruse scored 283 and finished seventh among high school boys in the bullseye tournament. Kruse was the lone competitor for the Cardinals in the 7 p.m. flight Friday night, and he was on point.

Anderson earned his top 10 finish in the 3D tournament. He finished in sixth place among high school boys with a score of 275.

All CHS archers shot 3D in the 4 p.m. slot Friday, and several had notable finishes despite not qualifying for nationals. Hailee Weber finished 15th among high school girls with a 271. Alex Braaten scored a 268, which put him in 13th place among high school boys, and Braden Kruse finished in 16th place with a 267. Mason Cook finished 15th among elementary boys with a score of 236.

Six Midkota-Kensal archers punched their tickets to the national tournament. In bullseye, Nolan Hoffman and Cole Wessels claimed two of the top 10 slots in the elementary boys' division. Wessels finished in sixth place with a 271, and Hoffman was right behind with a 270, good for seventh place.

Midkota-Kensal found more success in the 3D tournament, with four archers earning top 10 slots. They earned national tournament berths in all three levels of competition. Junior Kyle Johnson led the way for the Mustangs in 3D. He scored 277 and earned the fifth place medal in the high school boys' division.

Harlie Hoyt earned her slot at nationals with a sixth place finish among middle school girls. Her score was 274.

Jesse Wessels rounded out the top 10 in the middle school boys' division with a score of 272.

In the elementary division, it was Avery Johnson who made a mark. She finished seventh among the elementary girls with a 232.
