Ahead of the 2023 spring outdoor track season, Carrington's Logan Weninger decided to get a leg up on his competition.
For the past few months, the speedy Cardinal junior has been competing as an unattached athlete in collegiate indoor meets, as there is no officially-sanctioned high school season in North Dakota.
Weninger's head start paid off with two individual event victories at the State Class B Indoor Track Meet at NDSU's Shelly Ellig Indoor Track and Field Facility, and he also anchored another relay which took a first place award.
He would win the 200 (23.6 seconds) and 400-meter dashes (51.38), and crossed the line for the 4x400 relay team (3:40.65) which also included runners Jaxon Schaefer, Ryder Bickett and McKade Zink.
Schaefer had the other placing performance for CHS in the pole vault, taking seventh with an 8'9" effort.
With that, the CHS boys placed sixth overall with 32 points. Kindred, last year's state outdoor title winners, look to be the team to beat again with an unchallenged 132-point afternoon, well ahead of Hillsboro/Central Valley (54 points) in second.
The Cardinal girls made use of three event titles, two by Madison Johnson, one by Kenadie Pazdernik, a 4x800 relay win and depth in the hurdles and pole vault to win the team race with 82 points, 12 clear of runner-up Lisbon.
Johnson swept the 800 and 1,600-meter events in 2:30.71 and 5:31.76, respectively, and Pazdernik was the top 3,200 (two-mile) runner with a 12:42.93 clocking.
Pazdernik would run the second leg of the winning 4x800-meter team with Mercedes Lura, Kacie Rexin and Edyn Hoornaert. The foursome crossed the finish line in 10:53.04.
Senior Haley Wolsky placed second in both the 60-meter hurdles (10.07) behind meet record-setting winner Kelsie Belquist of NR-S, and matched that placement in the pole vault (9'3"). The 4x400 group of Kennedy and Isabel Wendel, Rexin and Hoornaert (4:29.57) were also second.
Lura took third in the pole vault and sixth in the 200, while Isabel Wendel was sixth in high jump and seventh in the 60 hurdles. Sierra Friedt's pole vault showing of seventh place rounded out the Cardinal scoring.
