CHS tracksters 8th at Snowbird

The winter that steadfastly refuses to end has led to local high school track teams backfilling their schedules with indoor meets.

Carrington's boys and girls traveled to NDSU's Shelly Ellig complex Friday, March 31, for the second straight week, this time to participate in the Bison Snowbird Meet.

Both Cardinal squads placed eighth in their respective team races, taking on a field mostly composed of Fargo-area Class A schools, the two Grand Forks programs and a few Minnesota teams.

Like they did in their first outing of the season, Logan Weninger and Madison Johnson were individual event winners for the Cards.

Weninger took the boys' 200-meter dash title in 23.19 seconds, and was runner-up by six-tenths of a second behind Fargo South's Austin Zulu in the 400 with a 51.74 time.

In the girls' 1,600, Johnson held off a charge from Moorhead's Avery Marquardt and Hannah Westin of Shiloh Christian to win by .86 seconds (5:31.59). She was also third in the 800 in 2:29.42, as the second through sixth place runners were within one-and-a-half seconds of each other. In each race, Kenadie Pazdernik earned placing points by taking seventh (1,600, 5:40.21) and ninth (800, 2:35.53).

The CHS boys' other placing efforts came from the 4x400-meter relay group of Jaxon Schaefer, Ryder Bickett, McKade Zink and Weninger, third in 3:38.57, along with a three-way tie for seventh place in the pole vault forged by Schaefer, Trace Hoggarth and Kael Kovar at nine feet.

Other notable achievers in the Cardinal girls' ranks included Mercedes Lura's fifth place in pole vault (9'3"), Haley Wolsky, seventh in the 60-meter hurdle finals (10.15), a fifth place from the 4x400 relay, and dual seventh place finishes by the 4x200 and 4x800 teams.
