On April 25, students from Carrington High School attended the finals of the 65th annual Know Your State Competition held each year at and sponsored by Bismarck State College and the North Dakota Masonic Foundation.
The Know Your State Contest is to help motivate and encourage students to gain an interest in North Dakota, becoming better citizens, voters, and leaders for the state.
This year Ethan Gast, Jake Otto, Emma Hone, Chloe Hovdenes, Nicole Lee, and Kaylee Barone attended.
Students volunteer to take the initial local test at their school. Those with test scores that put them in the top 20% of all participants across the state are selected to participate in the finals.
The finals test consists of multiple choice, short answer, and essay questions covering topics such as history, government, current events, geography, economics, literature, and the arts of North Dakota.
Each finalist received the book "Undaunted Courage" by Stephen Ambrose, a Know Your State Commemorative Coin, and certificate celebrating the achievement of reaching the finals.
Students finishing in the top four places receive cash prizes as well.
Emma Hone finished in fourth place overall and was awarded the $500 cash prize and trophy.
