The Carrington FFA Chapter placed first at the 2023 North Dakota State FFA Horse Judging Career Development Event held Tuesday, May 9 at the NDSU Equine Center in Fargo.
Team members included Baylee Lura, Karlee Lesmann, Jaedyn Lura, and Jozey Retzlaff. Baylee Lura placed third individually, receiving a gold award. Karlee Lesmann placed ninth, receiving a gold award. Jozey Retzlaff received a gold individual award and Jaedyn Lura received a bronze individual award.
The team will represent North Dakota at the 2023 National FFA Convention held in Indianapolis, Indiana, in November.
The Horse Judging event consisted of evaluating six classes of horses. Three classes were placed with the horses on halter and three classes were performance classes. The performance classes included Western Horsemanship, Hunter Under Saddle, and Western Pleasure.
The participants also presented oral reasons on two of the classes to justify their placing of the horses.
A written test was taken in various aspects of horse tack, breeds, anatomy, and structure.
A total of ninety five FFA members from thirty two FFA chapters competed in the event.
