Books and Bits: 'Bee a Reader' summer reading program

Summer is my favorite season – it's full of warmth and sunshine and back-deck reading. Summer is also my favorite time to be a public librarian because my days are full of readers and all kinds of activities.

The library's summer reading program is one of the most popular and most important programs that we offer. This year's theme is "Bee a Reader."

Most people recognize how important reading is for children. It helps improve language skills, develops imagination, and prepares for academic success. Summer reading can help retain reading skills that have been practiced throughout the school year and prevent the "summer slide," giving children a successful start to the new school term.

Reading to or with children is also a way to develop a special bond and reinforces for children that their parents value reading and learning. Reading is a life skill for everyone, and the summer reading program serves as a reminder to have fun while reading!

Summer Reading at Carrington City Library has two parts. First are the reading challenges for all ages: up to Kindergarten, K-3, 4-6, Teens and Adults. Completing challenge sheets can earn weekly incentive prizes, earn entries in grand prize drawings, open the door to new worlds with the turn of each page. In addition to weekly incentives and grand prizes, awards will be given to the top readers at each level.

Secondly, we have a variety of activities, including Yoga in the park, arts and crafts, STEM activities, Lunch and Learn opportunities, movies and more. A description of activities for the week will be available on the library website, emailed to registered participants, and posted to social media. Everyone is welcome to attend, and participating in the reading challenges is not required. All programs are free of charge.

Registration for the Summer Library Program is now open. Registrations can be completed by going to the library website at carringtonlibrary.org, calling the library at 652-3921, emailing cgtnlib1@outlook.com or stopping at the library.

The Summer Reading program will end with a swim party in late July to recognize success and celebrate reading. For more information, call the library at 652-3921. Library hours are 10:30 to 5:30 Monday through Thursday and 10:30-1:30 on Saturday.

The Summer Reading program is generously sponsored each year by Gate City Bank. The library has also received a grant this year from the North Dakota Community Foundation to help defray summer reading expenses.
