From the Past: Local students attend music camp

75 Years Ago

June 17, 1948

Erma Posey of Grace City, prominent member of the Grace City Live Wires 4-H Club, was elected Foster County Dairy Queen at the climaxing event of the annual Dairy Day in Carrington Tuesday. Other candidates for queen, were Lois Indergaard, Estabrook Merrymakers Club; Marlys Midgley, Busy Brownies, McHenry; Bonita Pederson, Clever Stitchers, Juanita, and Theresa Wolf, Busy Bees, Bordulac.

At the golf tournament held in Harvey on Sunday, Dr. R.F. Gililand won the consolation in the third flight, and Floyd Felchle the consolation in the fourth flight. Other players from Carrington attending were A.G. Schultz, Phil Newharth and Russ Marcussen.

G. H. Gwynn, Standard Oil truck driver, has been awarded a safe driving recognition card, which is an incentive to a continuance record of safe driving. It is awarded by the oil company among employees in the interest of safety to lives and property. No accidents are chargeable to Mr. Gwynn’s record over a period of 19 years.

Gwendolyn L. McNeese, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George McNeese and Stanley Lowe were united in marriage Sunday, June 13, at 12:30 in the Lutheran church with Rev. A.O. Borlaug reading the wedding ceremony.

Hildur Fadness, McHenry, was rushed to the Trinity Hospital at Jamestown by airplane Saturday evening where he underwent an operation for ruptured ulcers. Mrs. Fadness accompanied him there and remained with him until Tuesday.

Last Saturday night at the Clifford Silkey home, twenty ladies were guests at a bridal shower for Ivadell Pierson. Lunch was served by the hostesses, Mrs. Clifford Silkey, Mrs. Elmer Silkey and Mrs. Vernus Land.

A bridal shower honoring Phyillis Betts was held Friday evening at the Al Pierson home, with Ivadell and LaVonne Pierson as hostesses. Fourteen girls attended. Lunch was served and Phyllis received many gifts.

50 Years Ago

June 20, 1973

Glenfield Fadness-Walen VFW Post No. 9068 received a certificate of award from the National Teenager Pageant last week. The post sponsored the appearance of Sharon Lynn Fors in the pageant held in Aberdeen. Miss Fors, a 1973 graduate of Glenfield-Sutton High School, is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Donald Fors, Sutton.

Long awaited rain washed out the Saturday evening events of Frontier Days, but the threatening skies of Sunday only appeared to add zest to the rescheduled demolition derby and fireworks display.

There is a possibility that Carrington may have the services of a full time dentist before the summer has ended, according to Willard Emmerich, chairman of the Chamber of Commerce’s medical committee.

The Carrington Softball League will sponsor a 16-team tournament at the local diamonds Sunday. The tourney will entail an entire day of softball as the first games get underway at 9 a.m. and the championship game is expected to begin at about 5:30 p.m.

Twenty-three Carrington band students are attending the International Music Camp at the International Peace Gardens. Each of the students attending this year received a $20 scholarship from a summer band camp scholarship fund.

Jim Fike was winner of first place in both the first heat and trophy dash in the street class during car racing at Central Speedway Sunday. Bob Biel and Kevin Galt were second and third in the heat. In the semi-final Biel was first, Fike second and Mike Baskerville third.

Mr. and Mrs. Adam Malinski, Carrington, announce the engagement of their daughter, Pamela Danae, to James Raymond Twardy, son of Mrs. June Twardy, Minneapolis.

June 22, 1998

After nearly 3 years the airport is now officially open for business after a botched job. The project failed to meet specs after the first paving job was done.

Jennifer Willyard has been awarded a $25,000 Faculty Scholarship from Concordia College, Moorhead, MN.

Vandalism in the Carrington High School parking lot was reported last week according to police reports. The vehicles belonged to Russell Sherman and Rick Pretzer, both of Carrington. Sherman’s vehicle, a 1981 Ford LTD, had its rear window and passenger side windows shattered and Pretzer’s vehicle, a 1986 Chevy Blazer, had the front passenger side window broken out.

A former Sykeston priest, Father Adam Hasey, has announced his retirement effective July 1.

Long-time teacher aide at Carrington Elementary School Delores Burkhart, is retiring after serving the district for 28 years.

Area Obituaries - Jenny Wren, 92, of New Rockford died Sunday, June 14; Ella Prentice, 83, Carrington died Tuesday, June 16.

New Arrivals - daughter, Kauri Jo was born to Marty and Jan Hochhalter on June 13.

Seaburg Drug in Carrington recently presented a check to Jan Hart, president of Carrington Health Center Auxiliary for $1,210.50. The money was raised by a Beanie Baby auction held in March.

Woodworth News - Lawrence and Jean Hochhalter went to Minot last week spent the night there at Trinity Hospital with Gertrude Slotto who is very ill.

The American Legion Rice-Deede Post again sponsored swimming lessons for area children. Marretta Kuhn and Sherry Krenz drove the bus for the two week session which included 25 swimmers from the Pettibone-Woodworth area. Lois Nenow was in charge of arrangements..

LuAnn Goter came home Sunday evening after taking her parents, Henry and Minnie Schmidt to a 50th wedding anniversary of Hank and Shirley Kuester of Montello, Wisconsin.

Cathay News - Selmer and Evelyn Veen were visitors at the Merle Munson home at Grace City on Sunday.

Alan Bittner went to Fessenden on Friday and visited his mother, Mrs. Alfred Bittner at her home.

Maureen Cook went to New Rockford to the play, “Grace and Gloria,” on Sunday. Saturday they went to Spirit Lake Casino and saw the Platters, Coasters and Drifters perform.
