Post 25 edged by Jamestown; blank Kidder Co.

The John Raymond O'Hara Post 25 Redbirds of Carrington got the win they needed in a 3-0 blanking over Kidder County Post 231 on Monday, June 19, at Pirate Field in Steele, but they were several executed pitches away from a major win in Jamestown.

Behind another nearly-untouchable outing from veteran lefty Lucas Hendrickson, the 'Birds improved to 2-0 in American Legion Class B District 4 play and 3-1 overall.

It could have been 4-0, however, the Class AA Jamestown Post 14 Eagles put up a three-run bottom of the seventh inning to take a 6-5 win over Post 25 Friday night, June 16, at Jack Brown Stadium.

Hendrickson allowed just one hit in the win over Post 231, that coming to leadoff hitter Collin Zimmerman. He walked just one and struck out six.

Kidder County's Blake Braun was saddled with the loss, though not for lack of effort on his part. In between giving up eight hits over a complete game's worth of mound work, he struck out 13 Redbird hitters.

Hudson Schmitz went a perfect 3-for-3, doubling twice and driving in an RBI. Grady Shipman also had a double among his two hits, and scored two of the Post 25 runs.

Hendrickson and Owen Hagel both went 1-for-3 with runs driven in, and Josh Bickett was also 1-for-3 and scored. On the bases, Jack Erickson had a stolen base.

The Redbirds left six runners on base, and Kidder County just two.

Against Kidder County, Post 25 tallied single runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings to help propel Hendrickson to his second win of the season.

Three days earlier, the Eagles were the ones celebrating an emotional comeback, thanks to Kaiden Hakanson's two-run walkoff single off Hendrickson in the final frame.

Post 14 would take a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second, but that was answered by a two-spot from the Redbirds in the top of the fourth. Jamestown would add another run in the last half of the inning, and Post 25 would get it back in the fifth.

Tied 3-3 headed to the seventh, the Redbirds responded with two runs against Eagles reliever Carson Orr. Orr threw the final three innings in relief of Post 14 pitchers Tyson Jorrison and Brooks Roaldson.

Shipman had a double in the loss to the Eagles, going 2-for-5 with a stolen base, run and two RBIs. Hagel also put up a multi-hit night, and Schmitz had two RBIs and Kyle Johnson one more.

Kael Kovar and Bickett each had a hit and run, and Erickson also had a run scored.

Jamestown Post 14's offense was paced by three hits apiece from Orr and Reagan Sortland. Along with Hakanson, Mason Lunzman, Jackson Walters and former Carrington resident Payton Hochhalter had the other hits in the Eagles' column.

The Redbirds (3-1, 2-0) took on Valley City this past Friday and Fargo Post 400 on Saturday in a tournament split between Jamestown and Valley City host venues.

Post 25 gets back to action at City Park on Tuesday, June 27, with a single nine-inning game against the Jamestown A team. They will be off for the Fourth of July holiday until July 5, when they host New Rockford Post 30 for a 7/5 inning doubleheader. Both games begin at 5:30 p.m.
